Who are we?
The British Embassy in Vienna is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit a Communications Assistant.
Austria is an important partner for the UK. The British Embassy Vienna works to develop relations between all parts of Austria and all parts of the UK. Our work covers the breadth of the bilateral relationship, including political, commercial, security and economic issues of interest to both the UK and Austria, which we deliver under the framework of a Country Strategy setting out key objectives. Roles and responsibilities might evolve, in line with the Country Strategy.
Main purpose of job:
The job holder will provide communications and administrative assistance to the Communications Team at the British Embassy in Vienna; including social media channel management; video planning, production and promotion; press/influencer outreach and project coordination. Additionally, there will be an opportunity to focus on data analysis/research, as well as supporting the wider political team on events, visits and projects. There will also be opportunities to take on broader responsibilities should the candidate wish.
The Communications Assistant is part of the Communications Team which is embedded in the political section of the British Embassy. The job holder will help implement the Embassy’s communications, press and media strategy.
- Reporting to the Head of Communications, the job holder will support social media content production and perform other communications tasks as assigned to support the services and functions of the Vienna Three Missions platform.
- The job holder will also be point of contact for press enquiries and organising opportunities and meetings related to press relationships in coordination with the Head of Communications.
Main duties and responsibilities:
- Supporting content (video/photo) planning and production for social channels, particularly on Instagram and LinkedIn
- Assisting with public diplomacy projects, such as attending events (sometimes out of normal working hours), producing photo and video content, assisting with guest lists and media contacts.
- Supporting press outreach and media database management.
- Acting as backup in monitoring queries received in the Embassy’s public mailbox and social media channels, distributing enquires accordingly.
- Liaising with other sections on queries received via social media channels and public inboxes
- Monitoring media coverage on specific issues, translating articles from German to English.
- Assisting with data analysis and research on engagement and audience metrics through existing insight products
- Updating the content of the gov.uk website.
- Providing general administrative support to the team, including on project coordination and financial reporting.

This is a country based staff position at the British Embassy in Vienna; it is not a diplomatic designated position. The position is subject to the terms and conditions of British Embassy employees.
This is a full-time (35 hours per week) fixed-term contract until 30 September 2026, covering a period of internal secondment of the incumbent.
Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for extra hours worked. The annual leave entitlement is 25 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys 14 Austrian / UK public holidays per year and we are committed to ensuring a work / life balance. Flexible working is supported, within operational constraints and in line with the flexible working policy.
The cost of the Vienna yearly transport ticket is reimbursed (prorated for months in the role).
The monthly salary will be € 4,084 gross, payable 14 times a year (pro-rated for months worked in the role). You will receive your salary minus social insurance deductions and are expected to comply with Austrian tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Austrian authorities. However, in some cases you will receive an abated salary where dual taxation agreements apply. Further information will be given at the recruitment stage.
The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure they are legally able to work in Austria. The Embassy is not able to assist with any visa or sponsorship arrangements.
Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Austrian employment law.
Visa / Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Austria and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure you meet the legal requirements to live and work in this country.
