Are you passionate about international affairs, skilled at telling stories through digital content, and excited by the idea of shaping how a major Embassy communicates?
The British Embassy in The Hague is looking for a Communications Officer to help us share the UK–Netherlands story with audiences across both countries. This is a role where your ideas, creativity and political awareness will have real impact.
Who We Are:
The British Embassy in The Hague is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. We work at the centre of the UK-Netherlands partnership, and our Communications Team plays a crucial role in how we tell the UK-NL story. We help audiences understand what we do, why it matters, and how both countries are working together.
If you’re looking for a role that blends creativity, strategy, and international context, you will feel at home here.
What will you do?
This is a varied and hands‑on communications role. Some days you’ll be planning campaigns for high‑profile visits; others you’ll be out capturing video content, crafting social media posts, or drafting lines for senior leaders. You will be part of a small team that values initiative, good judgement, and fresh ideas.
Communications Planning (40%)
- Help identify the Embassy’s strategic communications priorities, as well as plan for specific communications campaigns, visits, or events.
- Monitor Dutch media to spot trends and topics that could be relevant for communications activities.
- Track and coordinate embassy digital communications, ensuring that key meetings, events, and moments are covered by digital communications that advance the embassy’s communications strategy.
- Provide enhanced support to comms planning and implementation regarding larger public diplomacy events.
- Use analytics to measure and demonstrate the impact of digital campaigns and communications activities.
Communications Implementation (40%)
- Create and publish high‑quality, engaging digital content, including producing and editing video content.
- Attend some embassy events to capture imagery or support in communications delivery.
- Support the Head of Communications on press engagement, including press releases, briefings and press conferences.
- Provide clear communications advice to Embassy colleagues.
- Draft tailored content for the Ambassador and other senior leaders.
Administration (20%)
- Together with the other members of the communications team, provide daily morning summaries of the Dutch news.
- Oversee internal communications within the Embassy.
- Monitor the communications section budget.
- Provide general administrative support for the wider team.
Note: Some occasional out-of-hours work may be needed to attend Embassy events. The role is primarily office-based and requires regular presence in the Hague.
Why you should apply?
This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the heart of an international partnership. You’ll gain hands‑on experience in digital communications, media engagement, political awareness, and public diplomacy within a supportive team that values creativity, initiative, and professional development.
If you are curious about global affairs, enjoy producing compelling content, and want your work to have real impact, this role will offer challenge, variety, and purpose.
What you’ll love about the role?
- Working on topics that shape UK–Netherlands cooperation.
- Gain strong experience across digital comms, video, media engagement, public diplomacy, and internal communications.
- Opportunities to support high‑profile visits and events.
- Exposure to senior leadership, diplomats, cross‑Embassy teams and external partners.
- A collaborative, supportive environment where new ideas are welcomed.
- A mix of strategy, hands‑on content creation, and real‑time communications.
Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity!
