Poland is an important partner for the UK. The British Embassy Warsaw works to develop relations between all parts of Poland and all parts of the UK. Our work covers the breadth of the bilateral relationship, including political, commercial, security and economic issues of interest to both the UK and Poland, which we deliver under the framework of a Country Strategy setting out key objectives. The Communications Officer will work within a small team to promote the Embassy’s key objectives through high quality, engaging and influencing communication campaigns.

Our Communications Officer will be expected to get up to speed quickly with key policy areas, and bring ideas and energy to the delivery of supportive campaigns across all forms of media. The job holder will stay abreast of media developments and communication trends in Poland, to ensure that the Embassy capitalises on opportunities to further our footprint and advance our messages.

This is a fast-paced job, which involves a frequent need to service ministerial and senior visits. It requires excellent communication and networking skills, as well as enthusiasm, energy and imagination.

The key deliverables are:

  • Supporting the overarching communications strategy implementation, working across all forms of communications to deliver engaging and high quality output;

  • Work closely with policy teams to design and run policy campaigns and develop core media lines and messaging. Ensure communication is thoroughly integrated into our policy work and take the lead on communications for agreed policy areas;

  • As part of this deliver innovative, engaging social media work and requests for print, broadcast and social media monitoring;

  • Support and where necessary lead the delivery of communications around high-level visits and events;

  • Evaluation of the Embassy’s Strategic Communications and FCDO global campaigns (e.g. Global Britain);

  • Cooperating with information providers, including administrating budget and invoices;

  • Potential management of one Administrative Officer (AO grade) Communications Support Officer.

  • Covering for other members of the team as necessary, including deputising for Head of Communication

Our ideal candidate will have: 

  • Full professional proficiency in Polish and English, including excellent writing skills at a minimum of C1 level according to CEFR*; 

  • Bachelors degree or higher in a related field;

  • At least 3 years of experience in communications campaigns, journalism or a related field;

  • Enthusiastic, energetic and highly creative team player with a proven passion for public communications;

  • Experience in developing and delivering a full cycle of communication campaigns;

  • A good understanding of the Polish media landscape, including traditional and social media and an ability to spot and exploit local trends to increase;

  • Proven experience in managing and delivering a demanding workload as well as responding flexibly to changing priorities;

  • Strong IT skills in MS Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint;

  • Experience of creating engaging content for social media, including by shooting and editing video and stills content.

  • Ability to work independently and show initiative with limited day-to-day supervision while operating as part of a wider team with shared goals and wide-ranging objectives;

  • Organisational skills: preparing media engagements such as press conferences & background briefings as well as public diplomacy events;

  • Strong sense of personal responsibility and the ability to assess and initiate activities independently.

  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion

  • Media skills: drafting engaging, influencing content, articles, social media entries in Polish and English language.

Good to have:

  • Experience of working with UK Government, especially knowledge of UK policies.
  • Proven track record of designing, running and evaluating successful public communication campaigns;

  • Experience working with the OASIS campaign model;

  • Experience with budget and invoice administration

This is a full-time, fixed-term position of 5 days (37.5 hours net) per week, for the period of 1 year. 

The gross salary for this position is PLN 11,757  gross per month.

Other benefits:

  • Working hours are flexible.
  • Staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for agreed extra hours worked.
  • The annual leave entitlement is 20 or 26 days per year pro rata.
  • The Embassy also enjoys a maximum of 14 Polish/UK public holidays per year.

Please note that staff members are responsible for paying any income tax required by the local law. 

The successful candidate will be subject to the Polish references check and satisfactory completion of a probationary period of three months. 

Candidates must have pre-existing right to live and work in Poland for the duration of the job offer in order to apply. The British Embassy does not sponsor work permits. 

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Warsaw are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to Polish employment law. 

Visa / Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Poland and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure you meet the legal requirements to live and work in this country. 

Learning & Development:

  • The successful candidate will be expected to get up to speed rapidly with the UK Government approach to communications, through completion of online and in-person courses.
  • They will also receive technical training, for example on publishing content to UK government websites.
  • The British Embassy Warsaw offers a wide range of other development opportunities, including shadowing other teams, mentoring and interactive Learning and Development sessions, as supported by the wider FCDO training offer.

Working patterns: The British Embassy Warsaw has a strong commitment to work/life balance. Standard office hours are 8.30-16.30 with flexi-hours possibility within the opening hours 8.00-18.00.

The role requires working from the office. We have mobile technology, and remote working option on some days in this role would have to be agreed with the line manager subject to operational needs within the team.
