The British Embassy El Salvador are looking for a dynamic self-starter who will lead on Media and Communications, Chevening scholars, Projects and Climate policy at the Embassy.
The successful candidate will:
- Create and implement a tailored ‘Communications and Engagement Plan’ for social media platforms, including the Ambassador’s, and develop and maintain a range of stakeholder contacts.
- Understand traditional and digital media environments, have a good knowledge of government, domestic and foreign policy, and regional political dynamics.
- Lead on climate related activities, aligning UK climate policy objectives with those of El Salvador to build relations and seek out opportunities for bilateral collaboration, including through projects.
- Lead end-to-end on the process of advertising, recruiting and supporting annual cohorts of Chevening Scholars from El Salvador, and serve as the liaison point for the active and growing Chevening alumni community.
- Lead on the implementation of projects through their implementation lifecycle in line with project management best practice.
Success will mean your work amplifies the voice and presence of His Majesty’s Ambassador and the British Embassy on the issues and objectives that matter most to the UK in EL Salvador around prosperity themes (e.g. climate, growth), culture, education and security.
You will be an integral member of a small, fast-paced and creative team, working closely with the Ambassador, the Deputy Ambassador and other Embassy staff. For the right person, this is an opportunity to transform the Embassy’s approach to communications.
1. Media and Communications (50%):
- Create and implement a Comms and External Engagement Plan, ensuring a clear forward-look, that supports the Embassy’s strategic objectives. This will cover traditional and social media, as well as events.
- Ensure alignment of the plan with UK Government priorities, key El Salvador events and other international events of relevance.
- Monitor and evaluate impact of comms outreach and adapt activities as needed for maximum impact.
- Build a network of media and public engagement contacts.
- Manage HMA and the Embassy’s social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, X and a WhatsApp Community), building an Embassy ‘brand’.
- Regularly monitor and interact with other posts and accounts.
- Create and post content regularly, tailoring the message to each platform and audience.
- Create engaging, innovative graphics and videos.
- Draft and disseminate press releases and articles, and prepare relevant background and speaking notes for media handling.
- Help organise strategic media interviews.
2. Climate Policy (20%):
- Take forward one of the key strategic priorities for the Embassy, climate policy.
- Build local alliances and report on key developments and opportunities for UK engagement.
- Amplifying UK asks and lobbying on key UK climate priorities.
- Support climate related project activities with policy advice.
3. Chevening Scholars (15%):
- Lead end-to-end on the process of advertising, recruiting and supporting annual cohorts of Chevening Scholars in El Salvador.
- Conduct Chevening interviews, supporting Embassy colleagues on the selection of scholars.
- Serve as the liaison point for the active and growing Chevening Alumni community.
4. Projects (10%):
- Help formulate ideas for and deliver small seed funded programmes to create and nurture a pipeline of strategically aligned interventions
- Use project management skills to ensure projects run smoothly, to time and budget.
- Provide strategic guidance to keep activities aligned with UK Government policy objectives.
5. IT Support Officer (5%):
- Act as the primary contact between IT Technical Support teams in London, Hanslope Park, and the Embassy, with assistance from the Deputy IT Support Officer.
- Oversee IT stock and equipment management, including maintenance needs, with support from the Deputy IT Support Officer
There is no formal line management responsibility, but the role holder will be supported by an intern; and be responsible for coordinating external staff and contractors at events.

- An undergraduate degree and a minimum of two years relevant experience of working in communications, media or public relations;
OR at least 4 years relevant experience if no degree. - Strong understanding of traditional and social media dynamics, including content creation and audience targeting.
- Experience professionally managing social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, X, WhatsApp) and building a consistent brand voice.
- Ability to produce engaging graphics and videos tailored to different platforms.
- Familiarity with social media analytics and tools for monitoring and evaluating impact.
- Understanding of global and local climate priorities, sustainability, and environmental policy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong planning and delivery skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
- Understanding of The El Salvador media and political context.

Candidates must have the legal status to live and work in El Salvador at time of application.
Learning and development:
As part of the role, you will be able to undertake Communication Skills Training offered by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) on:
• Strategic Communication Planning
• Effective Media Relations
• Digital Communication
• Internal Communication
You can also undertake training through the UK’s Civil Service Learning Academy, the Government Communication Service and the FCDO’s International Academy, which provide amble training on UK strategic priorities.
There is a Comms and Soft Power Network of officers across the UK’s foreign missions, who offer advice and support.
There are also regional groupings and Communications Hubs (including one in Mexico City) and conferences, where comms officers can meet in person. Similar groupings exist for policy areas.
Other:
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list. If during the reserve period of 6 months the same or largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second of subsequent candidate.
