Main purpose of job:
The British Embassy Mexico City is currently seeking a Consular and Network Intern to join the team! The jobholder will support the Consular team in delivering excellent consular services and assistance to British Nationals in distress, along with researching, preventive and administration work. This will involve working with a range of stakeholders, including NGOs, consular officers from other Embassies and Mexican Government officials. S/He will also support the organisation of events across the Region and virtual meetings.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Provide support to the Consular team in all areas of consular work, from assistance to British Nationals, and file keeping, to events logistics.
- Help to establish and maintain a network of key contacts, such as government agencies, NGOs, other Embassies, etc.
- Support Consular Team in Mexico on performing required Notarial and Documentary Services and Citizenship Ceremonies logistics according to guidance.
- Help with the creation/implementation of consular preventive work through campaigns based on trends the Consular team have spotted.
- Support consular officers on daily tasks, such as calls, letters, emails and enquiries to British Nationals, authorities, teams in London, other embassies, etc.
- Engaging with the Emergency Travel Document Centre to deliver and ensure high quality of service on documentation.
- Assist Vice Consul on any Rapid Deployment Team enquires, tasks or support needed for the Americas Region.
- Support Consular Team in Cancun and the region, when required.
- Support Consular Regional Operations Manager on admin tasks as required.
- Support Consular Team on Crisis/ Crisis exercises as appropriate.
- Provide occasional support to the Network Coordinator when required.
- Support with market research occasionally.
- Provide support with the Regional Network News.
- Provide cover to Network Coordinator as required.
- Assist the Consular Team in regional visits and stakeholders meetings/visits.
- Assist with clerical work within the Consular Team.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience:
- Partial or completed university studies in International Relations/Business, Business Administration, Tourism, Psychology or any other relevant degree.
- Being able to liaise with people over requirements and ask for help where stuck, but also able to work independently.
- Computer literate, working with Microsoft Windows and able to manage information effectively with available computer systems.
- Should be a proactive and creative self-starter with strong interpersonal skills who has the ability to learn quickly.
- Excellent organisation, prioritisation and communication skills.
- Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point), Outlook, SharePoint, Teams.
- Excellent organisation skills.
Language requirements:
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English (C1-C2) and Spanish (C1-C2).

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience:
- Basic understanding of the relevant Mexican Institutions and legal/bureaucratic processes.
- Customer/Casework experience, especially dealing with vulnerable people in English.

Candidates must be able to live and work in Mexico in their own right.
The successful candidate will be subject to a security clearance and professional reference checks.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.

Working patterns:
This is a 1-year internship role. The successful candidate will be expected to work 25 hours per week, (flexible hours, 5 hours per day), with 4 days per week minimum working at the office.
