Main purpose of job:
The successful candidate will be part of the British Embassy’s regional engagement team – “North China Outreach” – and will focus on developing and supporting the UK’s bilateral relationships with provinces of North China. The Outreach Team was created over ten years ago and is dedicated to promoting closer government-to-government, business-to-business and people-to-people links with China’s provinces and second / third-tier cities – in line with the Embassy’s overall business plan and priorities.
The jobholder will be involved in a wide range of activities to expand and deepen the Embassy’s engagement in and understanding of North China. The jobholder will need to undertake regional travel on a fairly regular basis to develop and maintain relationships with local government departments, businesses, academia, and other organisations and contacts relevant to UK policy interests; and in order to support and deliver visits by Embassy teams. The overall aim of these visits is to build UK understanding of provincial China, through regional insights reporting, and to promote UK objectives through private and public diplomacy.
The successful candidate will need to have plenty of initiative, strong interpersonal and team working skills, as well as good verbal and written communication, and a “can-do attitude”. In return, the jobholder can expect travel opportunities, the chance to build a range of skills and experience, and to gain an overview of the breadth of the UK government’s work in China.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:
- Support Senior Outreach Officers in delivering the Embassy’s priorities in North China.
- Communicate with internal teams/stakeholders in the Embassy, to understand UK interests and objectives and how Outreach Team can best support them.
- Develop relationships and communicate with a wide range of contacts in the provinces covered, including local Foreign Affairs Offices and government departments, universities and research institutions, businesses and industry bodies, UK alumni, and organisations with UK links.
- Support Senior Outreach Officers in the delivery of projects with local partners in North China, and in the delivery of local events.
- Organise and accompany provincial visits, and support high-level visits to the provinces, e.g. by the British Ambassador.
- Contribute to provincial reporting to develop the Embassy and other stakeholders’ understanding of the political, social and economic situation in the provinces covered.
- Provide support on cross-team planning, budgets, and information management.
Resources managed (staff and expenditure):
- None; however, the jobholder will be expected to help monitor expenditure, e.g. for travel, events, and projects.
Language requirements:
- Language: English & Mandarin
- Level of language required: English (highly proficient); Chinese (native or near native)
- Strong organisational skills.
- Experience of research, or project/event management, or working with the Chinese government
- English Chinese/Chinese–English translation skills.

The position is a full time, one-year fixed term contract until 2025.
Gross Salary:
- RMB 12,844 per month for Chinese nationals
- RMB 17,990 per month for Expats.

Other Information:
- Confirmation of employment will be conditional on the visa status of the applicant and agreement by the local authorities.
- Management of some parts of the job (e.g. VIP visits) can require working irregular hours that involve some early starts and late finishes; occasional weekend working is also required. But we do compensate employees by offering time off in lieu (TOIL).
