As part of the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) at the British Embassy in Mexico, this position will support the Security, Defence, Aerospace, Tech & Digital and Mining sectors team to promote relevant export opportunities for UK companies in Mexico.

Position is an Intern at the British Embassy in Mexico City, or based at the Consulate in Monterrey, or Guadalajara.

Roles and responsibilities:

The job entails producing market research, verification of contacts in Mexico and in the UK, public relations engagements with stakeholders in Mexico and the UK, databases production and management, keeping track of administrative tasks such as payments and admin, support the Security, Defence, Aerospace, Tech & Digital and Mining sectors team, and the wider DBT Mexico team in the organisation of trade events, trade missions and visit programmes.

  • Supporting senior team colleagues in advising UK companies on export opportunities with market reports, connections and general support.
  • Having a good eye for designing and putting together one-pagers and presentations simplifying complex information.
  • Conducting business and market research as needed.
  • Monitoring the media/internet for opportunities and bringing relevant information to the attention of the security, defence, aerospace, tech and digital and mining sectors team.
  • Following up on enquiries from UK companies.
  • Assisting in the organisation of activities/events/missions/visits.
  • Collaborating in keeping track of, and updating, databases and our CRM system (Data Hub) to ensure our pipeline and engagement activities are up to date.

Essential on arrival:  

  • Proactive team player with strong inter-personal communication skills, attention to detail, and a strong desire to learn.
  • Ability to work effectively, independently and deliver results.
  • Interest in creating and nourishing interpersonal relationships with stakeholders and team members.
  • High-level of competence in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Must be enrolled in an undergraduate programme (e.g. International Trade, International Relations or Economics) or recently graduated.

Language requirements:

Language: English and Spanish

Level of English language required: First Certificate Cambridge

Desirable:  

  • Previous experience and/or knowledge of International Relations
  • Public Relation Skills – Research and Verification of Contacts (via internet, telephone, email, etc.)

The successful candidate will be subject to a security clearance and professional reference checks.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.  

Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’.  If during the reserve period of 12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
