The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is the Trade and Investment Promotion and Negotiation organisation for the UK. We promote British trade and investment across the world, we support UK businesses overseas and attract foreign investment to our shores. We have 3,000 staff across the globe in over 100 countries.  

DBT divides the world into 9 regions, each led by His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner. The Latin American and the Carribean (LATAC) region is represented in 19 posts with a team of over 170 people.                                                                                                                       

DBT LATAC is looking for an Intern that will provide regional operational support to the LATAC Operations Team and the LATAC International Market Team (IMT) and will be based at the British Embassy in Bogota, Colombia. The LATAC Operations Team is responsible for supporting teams in the region to do their job better and smarter. One of the key themes is Data and Performance, collecting and analysing regional DBT data and track teams’ performance. IMT is the Region’s universal entry point for UK businesses and serves as a frontline response to triage enquiries and connect companies with internal or external support, with the core aim to help UK firms win and expand their business in the region.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a fast-paced, multicultural, and fascinating environment, in an important function. The jobholder will report to the LATAC Data and Performance Manager and LATAC IMT Adviser based in Bogota, Colombia, supporting in handling the day-to-day operations of both regional teams.

Roles and responsibilities: 

Data and Performance Support (45%)

  • Support the setting of country and business-sector targets (key performance indicators) during the Business Planning process by creating, receiving and organising files and engaging with colleagues throughout 19 countries and 8 priority sectors in LATAC.
  • Organise and coordinate the realisation of quarterly Operations Forums – that is, discussions between DBT LATAC’s senior leadership and market/sector leads on performance to date.
  • Support with monthly data analysis and reporting to DBT LATAC’s senior leadership.
  • Assist colleagues in the region with membership and access to various data platforms and market intelligence software funded centrally by the DBT LATAC team.
  • Provide assistance to the region on using our management information tools, such as Data Hub, Digital Workspace and Data Workspace.
  • Attend ad-hoc commissions from our UK headquarters or teams in the region using internal and external data sources.
  • Provide support to the LATAC Data and Performance Manager on any special data projects.

International Markets Team (IMT) support (45%)

  • Provide administrative support to the LATAC IMT as needed, arranging meetings, managing documents and providing support to the whole team.
  • Support the research and analysis of data to create market reports for UK companies from different sectors and markets in LATAC.
  • Help to identify stakeholders in the LATAC region based on criteria provided by UK companies and IM Advisers.
  • Keep up to date the different databases, tools, and platforms that the team needs to operate daily.
  • Provide assistance in the identification of new business opportunities for UK companies.
  • Assist the team with the creation and edit of documents, presentations, reports, etc., as well as helping the team with ad-hoc commissions from headquarters and other regional initiatives.
  • Assist with the LATAC IMT’s internal efforts, engaging with colleagues throughout the region, and gathering information as needed.

Special Projects (10%)

  • Take on various ad-hoc admin support roles such as organization of regional conferences and travels, and other regional activities as required.

  • Must be currently enrolled in undergraduate studies in Economics, Finance, Business Management, International Business, International Relations, Industrial Engineering, or similar degrees in a Colombian university. Applicants who do not meet this requirement will not be considered
  • Availability of at least 6 months before their graduation date, in order to complete the internship. Applicants who do not meet this requirement will not be considered
  • Availability to start their internship in the proposed date (Successful candidates will start the role in July 2024).
  • Bilingual (Spanish and English)
  • Excellent computer skills, including familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite of programs, particularly MS Excel.
  • Strong organisational, analytical and proactivity skills
  • Experience in data research, data management and data analysis
  • Must have the legal to live and work in Colombia.

  

Language requirements:

Language: English and Spanish (required). Portuguese (desirable).

Level of language required:  Advanced command of written and spoken English and Spanish are essential.   

  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Experience in project management and delivery
  • Experience working in teams, especially teams working remotely
  • Understanding of business, trade promotion, investment and market access work
  • Fluent in Portuguese

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate. 

Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):

The Embassy and the DBT LATAC network offer a wide range of learning and development opportunities throughout the year.

Successful candidate will have access to some internal training and job shadowing, as well as the opportunity (depending on interest and availability) to work on cross-embassy teams or projects.

Working patterns:

Full time. Monday to Thursday: 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Friday: 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. 

The British Embassy in Colombia has a flexible working policy.

Must have the legal status to live and work in Colombia.

The successful candidate must be enrolled in undergraduate studies in Economics, Finance, Business Management, International Business, International Relations, Industrial Engineering, or similar degrees in a Colombian university. It is mandatory that the candidates are students with availability of at least 6 months before their graduation date, in order to complete the internship.

The candidate understands and agrees to the starting date.

Social Security: EPS and ARL.

The estimated start date is tentative pending the successful candidate’s completion of security clearance procedures. As such, the start date is only an estimate and will be agreed upon by the candidate and hiring manager once these security clearance procedures are complete.
