Main purpose of job:

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) Barbados and Eastern Caribbean team is looking for a full-time Intern to assist in trade support activity, including, but not limited to, the recording, research, and analysis of identified sectors in the markets of the region. 

DBT is the United Kingdom’s trade, investment promotion and negotiations organisation. We foster British trade and investment across the world; support UK businesses overseas; and attract foreign investment to our shores. Our organisation comprises 3,000 staff across the globe, located in over 100 countries. 

DBT divides the world into 9 regions, each led by His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner. Jonathan Knott leads the Latin American and the Caribbean Region (LATAC), from São Paulo. The Network is represented in 19 Posts with a team of over 170. 

We are looking for someone who is open to new ideas and ways of working, is comfortable with constantly changing priorities, and can manage a full workload. Experience working in business administration is desirable.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Track and record potential commercial opportunities in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean by reading local newspapers and monitoring government and trade association websites, inputting and categorising information into the DBT Global Opportunities online database.
  • Conduct market, sector and trade policy research on the Barbados and Eastern Caribbean economies using open-source information (websites, spreadsheets, newspapers etc), reproducing results using a variety of channels to communicate this information effectively.
  • Complete administrative duties under the supervision of the Country Director – Barbados & the Eastern Caribbean, and the DBT Regional Director – Commonwealth Caribbean as required.
  • Assist with administration, planning and logistics for trade missions and trade promotion events as required.
  • Record all interactions with UK companies by the DBT team in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean in DataHub.
  • Support the DBT quarterly newsletter by collating information according to the DBT template and sending the newsletter out to identified sources, once approved.
  • Work with the DBT and FCDO Marcomms and Communications teams to manage and create content for social media channels.

  • The ability to read and interpret data accurately.
  • The ability to conduct detailed market and sector research via various mediums and accurately reflect this data in internal mechanisms and external promotional material.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer literacy across all MS platforms and other data platforms, with the ability to learn new computer software quickly.
  • Excellent planning and administrative skills.
  • The ability to work effectively in a hybrid manner.
  • References, preferably professional, will be requested.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a larger, virtual team.
  • Detailed-oriented.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Must have the legal status to live and work in Barbados in your own right, from time of application.

  • A recent undergraduate planning for further study in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrable research skills.
  • Interest in trade and international business.
  • Knowledge of Barbadian and Eastern Caribbean socioeconomic contexts.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’.  If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.

Working patterns: 

The British High Commission in Bridgetown currently operates on a hybrid model, allowing employees to work from home up to two days a week.
