The Digital, Media and Press Officer forms part of the Political section of the British Embassy and the job holder is responsible for ensuring the implementation of the Embassy’s communications, press and marketing strategy. They are responsible for ensuring the work of all sections of the Embassy is publicised and key messages announced through social media channels. The job holder will support Embassy’s priorities around Growth, Security, Core Services and Climate by drafting social media content, coordinating photos/videos and perform other communications tasks as assigned to support the services and functions of the political teams, and respond to variable demands in a fast-paced, dynamic, and high-profile organization. The job holder will also be point of contact for press enquiries and organising opportunities and meetings related to press relationships in coordination with the Head of Political Affairs.
Web Management and Social Media (40%)
- Develop and implement bespoke social media comms plan, seeking input from relevant sections of the Embassy linked to the Embassy’s Strategic Communications Plan
- Ensure proportional coverage between Guatemala and Honduras social media channels.
- Compile, edit, and publish photos, videos and content for social media.
- Draft and publish engaging content daily across all Embassy social media platforms, ensuring consistent messaging and visibility.
- Review and replicate FCDO media content where appropriate. Some content may need to be translated to Spanish.
- Promote official Embassy website content on social media channels on a regular basis (to be promoted in Spanish).
- Work with the Ambassador to promote their messages on the Embassy’s social media channels and personal accounts.
- Promote British Travel Advice for both Guatemala and Honduras using FCDO communications guidelines. Using agreed imagery and text to raise awareness of any changes and risks to British travellers (promote when relevant updates go live on site).
- Promote the Embassy’s projects and activities on social media and follow centrally managed campaigns to deliver wider British Government messages.
Supportive tasks (5%)
- Act as backup in monitoring Embassy’s public mailbox, distributing enquires accordingly.
- Manage the GOV.UK pages for Guatemala and Honduras, working with the Head of Political Section.
- Assist with project launch activities, such as attending events (sometimes out of normal working hours), assisting with guest lists and media contacts.
- Take photos and produce videos as necessary (including editing) adhering to guidelines. Publishing content following approval.
- Work closely with the regional Comms Hub based in Mexico City.
Duties to be Performed on Visual Design (30%):
- Develop and produce custom digital projects in support of specific public engagement goals with target audiences (for example, producing a video in support of specific initiative).
- Define, design, and create original professional quality graphics, infographics, branding, photos, etc., as well as multimedia material to support Mission’s public engagement with all audience groups, using tools such as Canva, Photoshop, Davinci Resolve, etc.
- Design and provide on-the-job training to Mission staff to expand in-house capacity to shoot quality photos and video and to create appropriate messages for social media.
- Ensure that public Embassy events/engagements receive photo/video coverage, where possible
- Organize and archive all photos, videos and graphic content created.
Press (10%):
- Develop and maintain relationships with local media outlets in coordination with Head of Political Section and translate Mission success stories into the language and format appropriate for local media consumption.
- Draft briefing documents, press releases and media notes, press plans, talking points, and any other documents necessary for press engagement in Spanish and English. Translates any documents necessary for press engagement.
- Monitor on-line, print, and broadcast media. Produce press summary and news analysis, when requested. Continually update on dominant or breaking news stories, narratives, and perceptions of UK/foreign policy.
- Integrate reporting from social media and analytics sites into press reporting.
- Monitor and report on media environment in main cities and rural areas in Guatemala and Honduras, including number and influence of media outlets and circulation/audience statistics.
Strategic Planning, Embassy Coordination, & Administrative Functions (15%)
- Maintain and update the Embassy’s Strategic Communications Plan, ensuring alignment with Country Business plan, FCDO priorities and regional objectives.
- Monitor and analyse digital trends across Guatemala and Honduras to identify shifts in audience demographics, interests, and content consumption preferences, including preferred formats such as graphics, video, photography, and audio.
- Production of multimedia and other digital products for editorial calendar, as well as multiple products for the projected slate of Mission programs and activities.
- Implement best practice for visual and multimedia components of external communication.
- Develop communication materials, including proposals, scripts, and trend analyses in both English and Spanish, and produce evaluation reports based on audience insights and campaign performance.
- When budget permits, organise, and implement travel to key areas where UK projects/scholars/companies are present to capture success stories from implementers and beneficiaries.

- Relevant University degree in communications/public relations/international relations or another relevant subject.
- Minimum two years’ experience in digital communications/social media agency/corporate communications/content management or similar.
- Experience using a style guide and visual identity guidelines across different media.
Language requirements:
Proficient in English and Spanish.

- Four or more years of experience in digital communications/social media agency/corporate communications/content management or similar, ideally within an international context.
- Experience with an international organization/NGO.
- Excellent organizational and analytical skills, complemented by sound interpersonal skills.
- Excellent English, both oral and in writing.
- Proven ability to communicate and engage effectively with digital media audiences.
- Ability to work within a competing environment and with multi-sectoral partners.
- Technical expertise and overall attitude at work are mandatory competencies.

Applicants must have the legal status to live and work in Guatemala at the time of application.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list. If during the reserve period of 6 months the same or largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second of subsequent candidate.
