The UK Government seeks a highly motivated Digital Media Officer to join our dynamic team at the British Consulate in New York. In this key role, you will be crucial in promoting the UK across New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Fairfield County, Connecticut, highlighting our strong bilateral relationship, cultural ties and shared values.

The successful candidate will have a strong track record of capturing and creating content, using a variety of editing tools and managing a range of social media platforms and digital outputs. We are looking for a candidate with creativity who can demonstrate imaginative ways of engaging online audiences.

As part of the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), you will contribute to shaping the UK’s role in the United States. We champion the UK’s national interests and values, promote the safety and prosperity of British citizens, and tackle global challenges in collaboration with our international partners. The role covers a wide range of policy areas, including politics, trade and investment, culture, tourism, tech, and AI etc.

Make a significant impact

As a key part of the communications team, and reporting to the Press Secretary, the Digital Media Officer will create and deliver comprehensive plans to promote the UK’s role in the US through content creation, earned digital coverage and our owned social media channels. You will have the opportunity to build and manage effective working relationships with journalists, influencers, and media contacts, leveraging the importance of digital content in the current media landscape. You will also be overseen by and work closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications and will be an active member of the wider communications team based in New York.

The successful candidate will also be required to work with a range of stakeholders across the Consulate to source and curate social media content for our diverse range of audiences.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Write, create, and edit digital content; writing posts for social media including tweets, and Instagram posts, blogs, scripts, and videos to communicate UK government priorities to US-based audiences.
  • Provide photography and videography support to the New York consulate’s activity, including high profile UK visitors to New York.
  • Providing photo and video support for high-profile visitors and events as well as editing, distributing, and archiving material.
  • Supporting the New York Press Secretary in the delivery of media engagements and overarching communication campaigns. Maximising press and media coverage from digital activity. Provide cover for the Press Secretary in their absence.
  • Regular monitoring and evaluation reports to measure social media performance.
  • Collaborate with digital and comms colleagues based in the British Embassy Washington and our US network of eight consulates across major US cities on social media outreach and tracking, event promotion, ministerial visits and forward planning.
  • Any other duties as assigned.  The role will involve supporting events and other work outside of working hours (for which you will be compensated).

Resources managed (staff and expenditure): 

  • BCG NY social media accounts

  • Excellent written skills
  • Strong organisational skills and time management
  • Experience working as part of a communications team
  • Experience and knowledge of the effective use social media platforms, digital tools and digital trends
  • Intermediate to advanced levels and familiarity with IT, photography, videography and editing software

Working patterns:

This role requires a standard working pattern, working 40 hours a week, but does not require set working hours each day.   

The British Embassy and its US Network embraces hybrid working, allowing its staff to typically work from home up to 2 times a week.  We are an organization that also recognises the critical value of team work and we embrace and endorse collaboration by ensuring that all staff attend the office flexibly yet regularly.  

This role requires semi-frequent out-of-working-hours activity. This includes photography and other content capture at official Consulate receptions and dinners, external engagements, and locally-organised events. 

As appropriate, there will also be needs to monitor and manage social media content on weekends and evenings. 

Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’.  If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
