The Corporate Services team at the British Embassy in Sofia is looking to recruit a full time Driver/Clerical Assistant to join the team as soon as possible. The Corporate Services department is at the core of the British Embassy’s operations and the Driver is a key member of the team.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide safe and timely transport services to all passengers, in official vehicles to and from scheduled appointments, and also during Ministerial visits, trips to the countryside and abroad.

As Driver the job holder will deal with delivery of documents, letters, invitations and packages to/from various organisations and partners. They will make sure that diplomatic mail is sent, received and distributed in an efficient and timely manner. As Clerical Assistant, the jobholder will support the Corporate Services team with purchases, deliveries, logistics around Embassy events and other ad hoc tasks.

The successful candidate will be reporting to the Head of the Ambassador’s Office.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Official Driver

 The role of the Driver is a challenging and rewarding position. It requires a motivated individual with attention to detail, someone who is proactive, demonstrates a can-do attitude, who is open to learn on the job, able to work with others and deliver a high-quality service.

  • Drive official vehicles in a professional and safe manner in the country and abroad. Be punctual, courteous and well-dressed at work.
  • Perform daily inspections to ensure all official vehicles are clean and in good working order. Report any defects, faults and incidents. Complete journey records sheets.
  • Ensure timely maintenance of official vehicles, including MOTs, insurances, vignettes, etc.
  • Assist diplomats and the Embassy with their vehicles.
  • Be prepared to work on shifts, late evenings, weekends and public holidays, in the country and abroad.

Clerical duties

  • Organise the Diplomatic Mail to be sent, received and distributed in timely manner.
  • Help with customs clearance of consignments for official use.
  • Deliver documents, letters, invitations, packages, etc to/from various organisations and Embassy contacts.
  • Help the Corporate Services team buy and pay for different products and items as necessary:  office consumables, household items, utility bills, etc.
  • Pay invoices and for services and account for them in a timely manner.
  • Help the Corporate Services team with ad hoc requests.

Our ideal candidate shows:

  • Working level of spoken and written English (Independent user) at a B1 level according to CEFR* and Excellent written and spoken proficiency in Bulgarian (at a minimum of a C1 level according to CEFR)*;
  • Valid Driver’s licence B category (C or D category will be an advantage);
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a professional driving role or similar experience;
  • Clean criminal and driving record;
  • Basic car maintenance knowledge;
  • Working level of IT skills (MS Office Outlook, Word, Excel);
  • Willingness to learn, develop and improve.
  • Flexibility and willing to support colleagues in ad hoc tasks.

Desirable qualities include: 

  • Positive, proactive attitude and ability to work in a team in a fast-moving environment;
  • Working level of spoken and written of English language knowledge higher than B1 level will be an advantage – or similar;
  • General knowledge of Sofia city and the outskirts – main roads, alternative routes, addresses of government offices and agencies;
  • Punctual and courteous manner with excellent customer service skills;
  • Valid Driver’s licence C or D category.

This a full-time and permanent position. The successful candidate will receive a monthly salary of BGN 1981.82 (gross), (non-negotiable, payable 13 times per year). The job holder may be required to work out of hours, on weekends and public holidays as necessary.  We pay an allowance for on-call and out-of-hours duties.

  • The job holder will be entitled to 25 days annual leave.
  • The successful candidate will be provided with a mobile phone with unlimited data and calls.

Due to the nature of the role, this position has no possibility for working from home.

Core skills training and mandatory trainings will be provided by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. All staff have a personal development plan and access to world class learning and development opportunities. 

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background and security clearance.
