Main purpose of job:
- The Driver will be a key member of the Corporate Services Team at the British Embassy in Bamako, which is responsible for ensuring the smooth and secure operation of the embassy’s administrative and logistical functions. The role directly supports the Transport and Logistics Manager and works closely with other embassy staff, visiting officials, and external service providers.
- The primary purpose of this role is to provide safe, reliable, and professional transport services for embassy personnel and official visitors. This includes operating armored vehicles, managing vehicle maintenance, and supporting the embassy’s transport pool in line with FCDO security protocols and operational standards.
- The driver plays a vital role in enabling the embassy to deliver on its diplomatic objectives by ensuring staff and visitors can move securely and efficiently across Bamako and beyond. The position contributes to the wider FCDO goals of effective service delivery, operational resilience, and diplomatic engagement.
Roles and responsibilities:
Transport Services for Embassy Staff and Visitors (65%)
- Drive embassy staff, official visitors, and delegations to and from destinations within Bamako and occasionally outside the city.
- Provide airport pick-up and drop-off services.
- Ensure safe, punctual, and courteous transport at all times.
- Support official events and functions requiring transport logistics.
Vehicle Maintenance and Safety Checks (15%)
- Conduct daily vehicle inspections using a checklist.
- Report faults or incidents promptly to the Transport Manager.
- Ensure vehicles are clean, fueled, and roadworthy.
- Maintain accurate records of mileage, fuel usage, and maintenance.
Security and Communication Protocols (10%)
- Operate armored vehicles (B5/B6) in accordance with security protocols.
- Participate in regular radio checks and maintain communication via radio or mobile phone.
- Follow security guidance and adapt to changing risk environments.
Administrative and Logistical Support (5%)
- Deliver letters, invitations, and parcels as required.
- Assist with errands and support the Corporate Services team with ad hoc tasks.
- Maintain vehicle logbooks and submit reports as needed.
Support for Emergency and Out-of-Hours Duties (5%)
- Be available for evening, weekend, and emergency assignments.
- Support crisis response or evacuation operations if required.
- Demonstrate flexibility and readiness to adjust to changing schedules.
Other skills / experience / qualifications:
- Effective communication skills in English
- Experience Driving for Diplomatic Missions, UN Agencies, or NGOs
- Familiarity with protocols, security procedures, and expectations in international or high-profile environments.
- Basic Computer Literacy
- Ability to use email, GPS apps, or digital logbooks for reporting and communication.
- First Aid or Defensive Driving Training / Certification – Adds value in emergency situations and enhances safety awareness.
- Customer Service Orientation
- Demonstrated ability to interact professionally and courteously with VIPs, staff, and visitors.

- Valid Category C Malian Driving License – Must be authorized to drive in Mali, including armoured vehicles.
- Minimum 5 Years of Professional Driving Experience – Demonstrates reliability and familiarity with professional driving standards.
- Proven Experience Driving Armoured Vehicles (B5/B6) -Required for operating in high-security environments.
- Clean Driving Record – No major traffic violations or accidents.
- Strong Knowledge of Bamako’s Road Network and Traffic Patterns
- Ensures efficient and timely transport services.
- Basic Vehicle Maintenance Skills – Ability to perform daily checks and report issues.
- Effective Communication Skills in French, and Bambara – Necessary for coordination with embassy staff and external contacts.
- Demonstrated Reliability and Punctuality – Critical for supporting time-sensitive diplomatic operations.
- Flexibility to Work Evenings, Weekends, and Overtime – Must accommodate embassy schedules and emergency duties.
- High Level of Discretion and Confidentiality – Must demonstrate trustworthiness and the ability to handle sensitive information and situations discreetly, especially when transporting diplomats or official documents.
