Main purpose of job:
The British Embassy Quito team has expanded substantially over the past three years, and the environment portfolio is one of the priority areas with the largest growth. We support policy design and implement programmes aligned to the UK´s priorities around economic growth and the environment.
The Economic and Environment team is recruiting a proactive person for the position of intern at the British Embassy in Quito to contribute to our goals supporting Ecuador’s environmental ambitions.
The intern will support in the delivery of several programmes focused on biodiversity conservation, climate change, oceans protection and forests, as well as helping with economic reporting.
Through this opportunity, the Embassy will provide valuable work experience for an Ecuadorean university student. This role will be of particular benefit to those students focused on the environment, ecology, biology, international relations, sustainable development, law, economics and finance and other similar fields.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Support the team by doing research and analysis in relevant topics to environmental programming of the UK in Ecuador.
- Support the team by doing research and analysis of Ecuador economic development and key indicators and regulatory instruments.
- Product one pagers and reports of the programmes and projects implemented by the team.
- Support due dillegence processes of institutions working in partnership with the Embassy.
- Support the team in stakeholder engagement processes: engagement, high level visits, programme implementation.
- Assist in the organisation of events: develop database, draw up an agenda, produce comms materials, confirm invites.
- Being the link between the Environment and Economic Team and the Communications officer to broadcast key information in social media channels.
- Support in designing bids relevant for the implementation of the team’s priorities
- Produce recommendations for the strategic development of the team and the programmes.
- Work as a flexible member of the Embassy to support wider Embassy work as needed.
Essential on arrival:
- Interest in the environment, economic development and the UK’s work in Ecuador
- Management of Microsoft Office
- Excellent analytical, strategic and synthesis skills
- Ability to respond flexibly to changing priorities
- Good time management and prioritization skills
- Ability to manage internal and external stakeholder
Language requirements:
Language: Spanish and English
Level of language required: fluent in both languages, both orally and writing
Desirable:
- Knowledge of international funding and cooperation
- Previous activities with local communities, oceans, forests, protected areas or any other environmental topic
- Knowledge of communication tools

Must have the legal status to live and work in Ecuador. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
