The British Embassy in Vilnius is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is looking for an Economic and Political Officer.

The jobholder will lead on economic reporting and analysis, whilst contributing to the wider work of the political section by supporting colleagues with their various portfolios. You will report on the Lithuanian economy, domestic economic policy and developing issues likely to impact the future economic development of Lithuania. You will work with regional officers specialising on Climate Change and Energy Security, providing local knowledge, contacts and assistance in these fields. Through this, you will work closely with Department of Business and Trade and the Science and Innovation Network, ensuring that the Embassy works in a co-ordinated and efficient manner. You will lead on identifying and delivering opportunities for engagement on your dossiers, including managing visits, project work and initiatives which further the UK’s interests.  You will be a team player – working closely with colleagues from across the Embassy to support the wider objectives of BE Vilnius.

Roles and responsibilities:

Economic Lead (40%)

  • Lead on domestic analysis (ad hoc and quarterly) and reporting on: Lithuania’s economic growth, reforms, financial policy (including Fintech and green finance), social policy, and anti-money laundering/financial crime policies.

  • In conjunction with Science and Innovation Network (SIN) and Department for Business and Trade (DBT) colleagues track domestic developments on emerging technologies and issues which will have a significant economic impact such as: AI, Fintech, GovTech, 5G/6G,critical minerals and semi-conductors. Coordinate BE Vilnius work on policy exchanges to promote more diverse, secure and resilient technology supply chains.

  • Lead on ad hoc economic and financial briefings whilst producing and maintaining a summary of economic indicators and statistics for use by Embassy, regional and London colleagues. 

Energy and Climate (Local Lead) (30%)

  • Track and report on developments in energy diversification, energy security and climate change in Lithuania, including Government policy . Support regional officers working on this portfolio with local knowledge, contacts and conducting lobbying.

  • Plan and implement projects related to energy and climate in Lithuania. Support the implementation of regional projects.

  • Coordinate with DBT on energy diversification, highlighting opportunities for UK business and any overlaps with UK Climate objectives.

Political Team (30%)

  • Provide support, assistance and cover across various Embassy activities, events and priorities. Assist colleagues working on bilateral engagement and foreign policy, providing resilience on these portfolios where necessary.

  • Lead on and manage visits relevant to your portfolio and assist with visits organised by the team.

  • Assist with events hosted by the Embassy including the annual King’s Birthday Party.

  • Fluency at C1 level in Lithuanian and English, according to CEFR Framework*, or equivalent;

  • Education to degree level, ideally in a relevant subject, e.g. international relations, politics or economics.

  • Ability to work under pressure and deal with competing priorities, managing projects, working on own initiative but equally effective as part of a team.

  • An enthusiastic team player, willing to work on a wide array of interesting and challenging topics.

  • Previous experience of working in an economic or political environment desirable.

  • Previous Project Management experience.

This is a full-time, 35 net hours per week, permanent contract, EO grade position.

The start date for the position is as soon as possible, subject to the availability of the candidate and the length of the recruitment process. 

We offer:

  • A base salary EUR 2949 (gross) and, in addition a sports allowance that is paid on top of the base salary.

  • 35-hour working week with a focus on work-life balance. Please note that while we offer some homeworking, this is primarily an office-based job.
  • 22 annual leave + 14 public holidays.
