Main purpose of job:
The British High Commission is seeking an Economic Intern to support UK government understanding of economic issues in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean (and wider region) by delivering economic reporting. This is a great opportunity to gain experience within the diplomatic and economic field while helping to foster the relationship between the UK and the Eastern Caribbean.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Provide economic reporting and analysis, in liaison with political team and economic adviser, for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, and the broader Caribbean region.
- Highlight and communicate key economic statistics, news and events in a concise and timely manner, working with the political team and economic adviser to understand and communicate their wider significance.
- Keep (excel) economic database up to data and accessible on Microsoft Teams.
- Support economic adviser with reviewing any key Multilateral Development Bank (MDB) reports and key regional economic reports.
- Assist with planning and logistics for economic missions and visits.
- Learning and Development: Develop analysis, presentation and communication skills, learn about how an international organisation operates.

- Must have the legal status to live and work in Barbados
- Undergraduate degree in majority economics
- The ability to read and interpret data accurately
- Intermediate to advanced computer literacy across all MS platforms and other data platforms, including excel, with the ability to learn new computer software quickly
- Excellent planning and administrative skills
- The ability to work effectively in remote location
- Excellent written and oral communications skills
- Good Interpersonal skills
- Ability to work as part of a larger, virtual team
- References, preferably professional, will be requested

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
Learning and development opportunities:
This internship is designed to be an immersive learning and development opportunity for the successful candidate. Under the supervision of our regional economic adviser, you will shadow and learn directly from members of the Inclusive Growth team. You will gain a real-world understanding of international development and diplomatic life and the unique intricacies of working within a network structure, observing and contributing to public and development diplomacy in action and learning applied economics for the Eastern Caribbean. On-the-job training will be provided, and there may be some opportunity to complete other economics based, or other general training offered by FCDO.
