Economic and Prosperity

The Economics Team, one of five groups in the Embassy’s Development Section, is at the heart of the Embassy’s work. The Team works closely with many other parts of the Embassy. In Development Section, for example, we collaborate with the Climate and Programmes Teams on finance and investment for development. Other examples of collaboration include working with i) the Commercial Section on financial inclusion and commercial opportunities; ii) the Trade Policy Team on support to the UK’s ongoing negotiations with Mexico to conclude a new Free Trade Agreements (FTA); and iii) the Political Section on reporting and organising high level visits. We have an incredible opportunity to support the development of the Embassy’s economic agenda.

The successful candidate will have the chance to contribute to this agenda by providing in-depth analysis on key economic and financial issues related to Mexico. He or she will be able to shape our priorities by proposing topics that he or she considers important and of interest, in consultation with the wider Team.

This is an exciting and challenging position, which covers a wide range of analytical and policy tasks as well as administrative and logistical ones. It will involve contact with most sections of the Embassy and a range of external contacts in Mexico and the UK. We often work under time pressure in a fast-paced environment. This is a great opportunity for a talented individual to work and learn at the heart of economic issues in a large foreign Embassy in Mexico.

The successful candidate will be involved in:

  • Support the Economics Team in providing and developing analysis; compiling data, statistics, and research papers, on the most important economic and financial issues related to Mexico;
  • Generate economic data and analysis in support of the wider Embassy;
  • Preparing and making regular and ad-hoc presentations about the Mexican economy to key stakeholders in Mexico and in the UK;
  • Provide logistical support for events, visits and meetings;
  • Manage the team’s stakeholder database, guaranteeing it is up to date and user-friendly.

  • Recently graduated or approaching graduation (within the last 3 semesters of their degree) from an undergraduate degree in Economics
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communications skills in both English and Spanish
  • Excellent written and computer skills, including with Excel (including both spreadsheet and graphical functions)
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to facilitate relationship with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Proactive, able to learn quickly and work under pressure with minimum supervision
  • Strong problem solving abilities
  • Strong analytic capabilities
  • Experience and interest in communication strategies
  • Proactive and able to prioritise and plan among different tasks

Language requirements: 

Language: English, Spanish
Level of language required: Fluent 

  • Good understanding of the Mexican economy
  • Confidence in conducting original economic analysis
  • Knowledge of Mexico trade policy and ongoing negotiations
  • Familiarity with public economic/trade databases
  • Understanding of the role of multilateral organisations (IMF, WB, OECD, UN, and G20)

Candidates must be able to live and work in Mexico in their own right.  

The successful candidate will be subject to a security clearance and professional reference checks.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.  

Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’.  If during the reserve period of 12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
