Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy’s Climate, Economy, Trade & Investment (CETI) team is responsible for the UK government’s work with Ethiopia in a wide range of economic issues, including supporting Ethiopia’s economic development, building economic ties between the UK and Ethiopia, and working with Ethiopia on the response to the climate crisis. The CETI team sits within a friendly British Embassy team, working across a wide range of priorities in Ethiopia. 

The purpose of the role is to provide policy and technical advisory support on economic and private sector development issues and programming to the Climate, Economy, Trade and Investment (CETI) team and a range of teams across the British Embassy.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Provide high quality economic analysis to advise the CETI team, other teams across the British Embassy and FCDO headquarters on policy and programmatic decisions.
  • Support delivery and management of UK development assistance programmes, particularly on private sector development and economic reform.
  • Support regular economic reporting to the British Embassy and teams in FCDO HQ, drawing on national macroeconomic data.
  • Build strong relationships within the CETI Team and the wider Embassy to actively shape and deliver UK objectives in Ethiopia across a range of climate, economic, trade and investment issues.
  • Develop and utilise strong networks within the Government of Ethiopia, the private sector and with other development partners to build effective partnerships for development, and to influence their activities in support of UK objectives.
  • Actively contribute to creating a positive, and inclusive working environment at the British Embassy that values and respects the skills, experiences and backgrounds of all our staff.      

  • An undergraduate degree in Economics.
  • At least 1 year of experience working on economic and/or private sector development / trade issues in Ethiopia.
  • Enthusiasm for working in a team and interest in economic development issues and trade.
  • Understanding how to apply technical economic skills:
    1. Microeconomic theory
    2. Macroeconomic theory
    3. International economics (interactions between the national and global economy)
    4. Using data to deliver evidence-based economic analysis

Language requirements: 

Language: English

Level of language required: Fluent in written and spoken English

  • Experience of working in an international organisation.
  • Experience of managing economic development programmes.
  • Experience of working with data, including knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other data tools.

The Climate Economy Trade and Investment Team at the British Embassy in Addis Ababa is a welcoming and friendly team.
