The British Embassy in Cairo is looking to recruit an Assistant Political Officer under the Political and Economic Section, job grade Administrative Officer (AO).
The main purpose of the job is to support a strong UK-Egypt relationship. This includes:
- Providing administrative support to ensure the smooth running of the Political and Economic Section.
- Assisting the delivery of high-level visits from government ministers and senior officials by coordinating across the Embassy.
- Supporting the Political and Economic Section to engage with the Egyptian government.
- Providing analysis and advice on a portfolio of foreign policy issues.
The successful candidate will work as part of a high performing political team.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Providing excellent organisational and administrative support to the Political and Economic Section, including leading on translating and transmitting formal diplomatic communications to the Egyptian government, liaising with Corporate Services on the management of Political and Economic Section budgets and HR planning, and assisting with Embassy events.
- Coordinating across the Embassy to help deliver well-organised and impactful visits from government ministers and senior officials to Egypt, working closely with relevant Political and Economic Section leads.
- Assisting the Political and Economic Section to create and maintain a strong network of contacts by building relationships with government, academia, politics and civil society, and supporting Embassy engagement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Providing written and oral advice, analysis and reports on a portfolio of policy issues relevant to UK-Egyptian cooperation – with a focus on foreign policy.
The above list is not exhaustive and the jobholder will be required to be flexible and take on other ad hoc tasks as required. The job description may be reviewed to meet changes in business needs.

- A university degree in a relevant discipline, such as political sciences.

- Excellent communication skills in English and Arabic, both written and spoken. Able to express ideas and messages clearly and concisely, both orally and in written communication.
- IT literate and well versed in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) and with accurate typing skills.

Eligibility:
Applicants must have the legal right to live and work in Egypt.
Remuneration:
The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable gross salary of USD 948 per month, subject to insurance and tax as per the usual regulations, based on a 36 hours per week. In accordance with the FCDO Policy and agreement with line manager, staff can work flexible hours.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.
We offer a competitive package including medical benefits, performance related bonus, recreational facilities, opportunities for job related training and development, etc. There are no other allowances payable as part of this package. No accommodation nor relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.
This role is for a full-time employment, on a fixed term contract basis for one (1) year, subject to three (3) months’ probationary period. The contract may be extended, subject to satisfactory performance and on on-going business requirement.

Process:
The recruitment process, including security clearance, is expected to take around 2-3 months. The security clearance process includes checks available in country and with UK, dependant on the security level required for the role and the candidates profile and UK footprint. You may experience some delay in the progress of this recruitment campaign, and we are working hard to minimise any disruption.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful at interview may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of six (6) months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
