The British Embassy in Cairo is looking to recruit a Vice Consul under the Consular Section, job grade Executive Officer (EO).
The Consular Team supports British people living, travelling, and working in our region: by providing high-quality, accessible consular services, focused on those most in need; responding rapidly to all crises, leading cross-government action; reducing preventable incidents affecting British people through collaboration with partners and governments.
The successful candidate will deliver high quality and efficient consular services to British nationals In Egypt in a complex operating environment, delivering the full range of consular assistance and notarial services on a day-to-day basis.
Roles and responsibilities:
Assistance and Services (60%)
Provide high quality, appropriate consular assistance on the full range of consular work, including detentions, hospitalisations welfare, parental child abduction, death, rape & sexual assaults, and Emergency Travel Documents, in line with FCDO policy and guidance also continuously reviewing of internal processes on how we to deliver consular assistance more efficiently and effectively. Providing regular reporting on consular activity as well as assisting in preparing focused and concise consular briefing for Senior Leadership.
Team Management (20%)
Management of Pro Consul team including setting strategically aligned objectives, allocation and monitoring of caseloads providing the first line of support and guidance to the team on complex casework, offering good learning and development opportunities and providing regular and honest developmental feedback. Ensure that the team is kept fully informed on business priorities and new developments and contribute to wider consular policy development both in Egypt and in the wider network.
Prevention (10%)
Coordinate and deliver prevention activity as well as working with HM Consul to analyse data and cases to identify issues and trends. Build and maintain a strong network of key contacts and stakeholders including wider Mission, Egyptian officials, friendly missions, and NGOs.
Crisis Management (5%)
Regularly update and test the consular part of Post’s Crisis Management Plan and ensure that the Crisis Consular team is fully staffed and trained. Support HM Consul and contribute effectively to post’s Crisis Committee and also support the RCA in crisis training and exercising.
Budget Management and Corporate/Embassy wide work (5%)
Manage consular budget so that it is on track to deliver 100% spend. Provide accurate monthly forecasts for the Consular Regional Operations Manager and maintain an up-to-date record of actual and planned expenditure. Contribute to work on wider Post initiatives, including participation on Post committees.

Eligibility:
Applicants must have the legal right to live and work in Egypt.
Remuneration:
The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable gross salary of USD 1,570 per month, subject to insurance and tax as per the usual regulations, based on a 36 hours per week. However, employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.
The nature of this role does not allow for full remote working, however there maybe opportunities to work from home occasionally in line with BE Cairo’s policy.
We offer a competitive package including medical benefits, performance related bonus, recreational facilities, opportunities for job related training and development, etc. There are no other allowances payable as part of this package. No accommodation nor relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.
The role is for a full-time employment on a fixed term contract basis for one (1) year, subject to three (3) months’ probationary period.

Process:
The recruitment process, including security clearance, is expected to take around 2-3 months. The security clearance process includes checks available in country and with UK, dependant on the security level required for the role and the candidates profile and UK footprint. You may experience some delay in the progress of this recruitment campaign, and we are working hard to minimise any disruption.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful at interview may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of six (6) months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
The start date mentioned in the job advert is a tentative start date and the successful candidate will be required to undergo security-vetting procedures. Any offer of employment will be subject to the candidate achieving suitable clearances.
