Main purpose of job:
The Technical Works Group of the British High Commission (BHC) is seeking to recruit an experienced and highly qualified Electrician, with a minimum of 2 years verifiable post qualification practical work experience. The sucessful Electrician will be part of a two person team responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems within and outside the BHC compound including residential, and office settings including outbuidling and other BHC electrical facilities and assets. The role ensures all work complies with ideally UK or at least Jamaican electrical regulations, safety standards, and relevant codes.
Roles and responsibilities:
Core role & responsibilites:
- Install, maintain, and repair wiring, lighting systems, circuit breakers, transformers, and electrical panels
- Read and interpret electrical drawings, blueprints, and schematics
- Troubleshoot electrical faults and perform corrective repairs
- Test electrical systems to ensure safety and functionality
- Ensure all installations comply with UK and or at least Jamaican Electrical Inspection regulations and standards
- Perform preventive maintenance to minimize system failures
- Use diagnostic tools, hand tools, and power tools safely and effectively
- Collaborate closely with other BHC electrician, TWG colleagues and other engineers, contractors, and other trades on projects
- Maintain accurate records of work completed and materials used
- Follow all occupational health and safety (OHS) and FCDO polices and procedures
- Collaborate with international FCDO Services Contractors and Regional Technical Lead
BHC specific Maintenance Services (Preventive and Corrective)
- Install, maintain and repair domestic and office wiring, and upgrades to UK specifications.
- Provide UK 22V electrical systems and distribution board upgrades where required.
- Adding of electrical sockets and lighting within an office and official residential environment and other electrical health and safety tasks.
- Ensure all electrical FCDO property standards are maintained
Operational Support
- Ensure electrical projects works are compliant with UK (or at least Jamaica) standards and meet Health and Safety requirements.

Essential on arrival:
- Government License: Evidence you have passed the Category 1 or Category 2 licensing exam administered by the Government Electrical Regulator (GER).
- Qualification / Vocational Training: Evidence that you hold a diploma in Electrical Installation / Engineering or preferably an NVQ-J Level 2/3 Certification from HEART / NTSA Trust in Electrical Installation or equivalent
- Current and valid driver’s licence – ability to drive manual shift vehicles preferred
2 – years’ work experience
- Knowledge of UK standards of wiring (18th Edition) or willing to undertake self learning, training and examination
- Good IT skills (latest Microsoft Office applications)
- Strong oral and written communication skills
Proven ability to work in a team. Candidate should also possess:
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to work cohesively as part of a technical team.
- Good listening skills and ability to follow instructions.
- Be able to manage time-sensitive tasks/emergencies.

Desirable:
- Training in occupational safety (e.g., OSHA-equivalent or local safety certification)
- First Aid certification (an added advantage)
- Knowledge of HVAC and split air conditioning systems
- Knowledge of generators
- Knowledge of emergency lighting systems
- Knowledge of UK test and inspection techniques
- Knowledge of hydraulic systems
- Knowledge of lightning protection systems
- A good understanding of other building trades
- Knowledge of Health & Safety practices
- Basic construction skills highly desirable
- Knowledge/experience in other disciplines would be an asset (plumbing, woodworking, etc)
- Physical Fitness: The ability to lift heavy equipment, climb ladders, and work in various weather conditions or confined spaces

Candidates must have the legal status to live and work in Jamaica at time of application.

Working hours:
Monday – Thursday 8:00 – 4:30, Friday 8:00 – 1:00
May be required to work outside of the standard working hours on mutually recognised circumstances.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list. If during the reserve period of 6 months the same or largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second of subsequent candidate.
