Main purpose of job:
To provide practical estates and maintenance support across the British High Commission and staff residential properties, ensuring buildings, facilities and public areas are safe, functional and well presented. The Estates Works Assistant works under the direction of the Maintenance Works Supervisor to carry out routine and ad‑hoc maintenance, support project and contractor activity, respond to maintenance requests within agreed timescales, and undertake driving and transport duties using official vehicles as required,
in support of the wider mission. The role is a key part of a team that ensures compliance with health and safety standards, and that the overall estate is fit for purpose for staff, visitors and official use.
Roles and responsibilities:
- General Maintenance: Carry out planned and reactive maintenance work in line with accommodation maintenance schedules on a weekly, monthly, or ad hoc basis as required. Tasks include, but are not limited to, cleaning gutters, painting walls and surfaces, undertaking basic plumbing works, treating drains, installing health and safety equipment, checking water tanks, and replacing light bulbs.
- Office Maintenance: Support the upkeep of all office and public areas, with particular focus on the entrance areas. Work closely with the Maintenance Works Supervisor (MWS) to ensure external walls, curbs, carports, and back of house areas are kept clean, well presented, and painted as required. Assist with internal office maintenance when necessary.
- Official Residence: Assist the Maintenance Works Supervisor in carrying out maintenance duties at the Official Residence, ensuring preventative maintenance is undertaken and the residence is maintained to a high standard at all times.
- Maintenance Works Request Forms (MWFs): Support the MWS in resolving maintenance works requests raised by reporting officers; ensuring tasks are completed within required timescales and that accommodation related issues are addressed promptly and effectively.
- Projects: Accompany contractors on site visits to residential and office properties to support the scoping of works for small projects and assist with contractor access and supervision as required.
- Transport, Driving and Logistics: Undertake driving duties using official vehicles, including the transportation of furniture, equipment, tools, materials, and personnel as required. Assist with lifting, loading and unloading items, collect parts and supplies, and support the transportation of archived materials to approved disposal sites, including the dump or port incinerator, in line with health and safety requirements.
- Communication: Liaise daily with the Estates Officer (EO) and Maintenance Works Supervisor regarding allocated tasks and priorities. Maintain effective working relationships with suppliers, contractors, and staff, communicating clearly and professionally as required.
- Additional Duties: Participate in bi‑monthly visits to the Official Residence and other properties alongside the Estates Officer and MWS. Assist with the storage, preparation, and sale of surplus furniture. Accompany suppliers, contractors, visiting consultants, and UK‑based staff on site visits as necessary. Undertake any other reasonable duties in support of the Estates and Corporate Services objectives.

Essential on arrival:
- Skills in at least one of the following: plumbing, electrical installation, carpentry, masonry, painting, air conditioning repair and maintenance, appliance repair, tiling.
- Heavy Duty Drivers Licence.
- IT experience including MS Office.

Applicants must have the legal status to live and work in Barbados.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list. If during the reserve period of 6 months the same or largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second of subsequent candidate.

Working Hours:
The role requires flexibility within a 38-hour work week (including breaks). This may include evening and occasional weekend duties. Time off in lieu (TOIL) will be granted for hours worked beyond 38.
