Main purpose of job:
The Research & Evidence Directorate (RED) leads FCDO’s global science and research portfolio, which is critical for the UK’s future prosperity, security and standing in the world. It plays an important role in the delivery of the Prime Minister’s ambition for the UK to continue to be a major international power in science, technology and research and rebuild its international development leadership as set out in the Integrated Review. RED is a global leader and influential investor in science, technology, and innovation. It delivers strong technical, science and analytical functions in support of strategic and operational decision-making, quality assurance and internal challenge. The range of expertise within RED makes it an exciting and intellectually stimulating place to work.
This post will sit within the South and Southeast Asia Research Hub (SARH) under RED’s Global Science Department (GSD) and will be located in the British High Commission in Delhi. SARH produces research, evidence, and analysis to enable data and evidence driven decision-making to improve the effectiveness and impact of FCDO in the region; develops strategic science and technology partnerships; facilitates research and innovation collaboration between the UK and India; and amplifies, connects, and leverages RED’s R&D investments to enhance development and diplomatic impact.
At an operational level, SARH (a) commissions research and evidence products for teams within the region that are implementing FCDO’s bilateral programmes (b) provides technical support to country teams by preparing rapid evidence reviews, signposting them to internal and external sources of evidence and advising on approaches and methodologies for evidence and learning products that may be commissioned by the Posts themselves, and (c) advises on collaborations between UK and international research institutions, to tackle pressing global issues. At this time, SARH’s geographical remit includes Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Timor-Leste.
The current role provides an excellent opportunity to those with analytical backgrounds to broaden and deepen their skillsets, and a chance to build analytical skills in several areas including rigorous evidence synthesis and assessment of research impacts. The role also offers a chance to build critical soft skills including effective relationship management across multiple stakeholders, building strong networks in a large, international organisation, and managing delivery-client engagement. The post holder is also provided the opportunity to autonomously manage research projects, working with leading global experts.
The job holder will work on important global topics, ranging from climate change to public diplomacy. He/she will work collaboratively with four other regional hubs based in Africa and in London.

Supporting the monitoring and evaluation of projects under Evidence Fund – GSD’s largest programme for commissioning demand-driven primary and secondary research. This will involve:
Cross-team working: This will involve working with the UK Hub and other regional Hubs to ensure coherence of research findings across regions / globally, and draw from / inform evidence products developed or commissioned by other teams, where relevant . This may involve working with the the Evidence Fund’s Fund Manager to support cross-learning across specific elements of the Evidence Fund portfolio.
The post holder with work closely with Research Specialists and Advisers in SARH across all the tasks above to implement the SARH evidence offer across the geographical remit of the team.

This is a Programme Funded Post under the Evidence Fund, based in the British High Commission, New Delhi. The appointment will be on a fixed-term contract for a period of two years.

For other than BHC Candidates, salary will be all-inclusive of INR 173,515 per month together with a 12% Provident Fund and 6% Special Allowance. This salary is non-negotiable.
Additionally, the BHC offers a great benefits package that includes annual domiciliary medical cover, plus a Group Hospitalisation Scheme with INR 500,000 floater cover for your immediate family.
No relocation or any other related costs or assistance will be provided.
Please note – BHC does not deduct tax at source and employees are required to ensure that any requirements of local income-tax law are complied with in full. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
