Main purpose of job:

The Maintenance Apprentice provides maintenance on all High Commission properties.  This is an important position helping to ensure the smooth running of the High Commission and the enlarged diplomatic estate including the residence.   It is therefore imperative the Maintenance Apprentice develops strong technical skills and a strong customer focus.

This is a busy role that provides great opportunity to learn and develop the required skills to maintain a multi-functional platform and diplomatic estate. Working across a range of technical areas, developing skills and learning on the job.  The jobholder will need a ‘can do’ approach, good organisation skills, the ability to work at pace and manage competing demands.  Although we are a busy team, we are deeply committed to developing and supporting our staff and encourage flexible working.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:

1. Estates Related work (80%)

  • Responsible for day-to-day operations of the estates and maintenance requirements of 3 owned properties and all leased properties
  • Hands on approach to general building maintenance and repair works
    • electrical knowledge
    • plumbing knowledge
    • basic carpentry works
  • Checks and balances on the High Commission assets
    • Generator
    • Water Tank
    • Tools
  • Fortnightly checks to be carried out across the Estate on the assets.
  • Assist in developing maintenance plans and innovative ideas to support the management of the Estate
  • Keep a sound record of all communication and work records
  • Always maintain professionalism and good ethics when dealing with contractors, customers, peers and colleagues.
  • Supervise contractors for specialist works at all owned with contractors, customers, peers and colleagues
  • Assist and ensure the schedule of works are followed, assist in developing pest control, AC servicing, maintenance works schedule to ensure FCDO Health and Safety Compliance.

2. Inventory and Filing Management (15%)

  • Maintain & update record of inventory of tools for the Estates Team
  • Maintain and effective filing system for maintenance records

3. Others (5%)

  • Available on weekends & public holiday for on call on rotation
  • Provide Health and Safety support when needed during official events/ functions

  • Excellent level in English language
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Clean Police Report
  • Medically fit to perform the role

  • Ability to use basic IT (computers and applications)
  • Basic understanding of Health and Safety

Open to Fiji citizens, permanent residents. Interstate applicants will be required to meet their own travel and relocation expenses.

No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

Staff recruited locally by the High Commission are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Fiji employment law.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.

Working patterns:

38 hours per week, flexible working pattern. The successful candidate will be required to operate a flexible work pattern. 

This position will also be required to work outside the normal working hours at times.
