Main purpose of job:
The British High Commission’s Foreign Policy Analyst is a key role in the Foreign and Security policy team, working directly with British diplomats. The main responsibility of the analyst is to track and coduct in-depth analysis and reporting on India’s foreign policy developments and its impact on UK interests in India and the wider region. The role would be ideally suited to someone looking to develop their professional skills in international relations or policymaking.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:
Political Reporting and Analysis (70%): Regular written reporting and updates on key Indian foreign policy developments, as well as reporting on longer term trends within Indian foreign policy and their impact on UK interests. Day-to-day reporting will include notable visits by/meetings with key GoI ministers; tracking how key international issues and narratives are playing out in domestic Indian politics and media etc. These reports will be read by and inform colleagues across the High Commission and in the UK, including senior readers. The job holder would also be expected to organise and host regular roundtables, talks etc. to help build HMG understanding of Indian foreign policy.
Networking (20%): Undertake regular contact building, garnering a well-rounded understanding how Indian foreign policy is evolving, how key world events are being viewed by domestic Indian audiences etc. This includes engaging with a range of Indian foreign policy commentators, academics, young leaders etc. to support your own work and that of others – i.e.: identifying the commentators for the High Commissioner and other senior Diplomats to engage with across different topic areas. Job holder will also identify useful contacts for teams across the High Commission, expanding the UK’s network and reach.
Corporate support (10%): The job holder will have opportunities to work on other policy areas of interest by supporting the wider work of the Foreign and Security Policy team and the Political Department. Examples include assisting with programme ideas for Senior Official and Ministerial visits and helping to implement them. As a member of the British High Commission, the job holder will identify and lead on a corporate contribution within the BHC.
The job holder will be responsible for the delivery of specific foreign policy projects and their associated budgets.

Essential on arrival:
- The job holder will need to be proactive, organised, having sharp analytical and communication skills and be a team player. The job holder would also have to be good at networking, building relationships and maintaining data base of contacts.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills. An ability to produce written work that is concise and timely and can deliver briefings and presentations in a confident and professional manner.
- Well-rounded understanding of Indian foreign policy and international relations.
- 2-5 years of experience working in government, Embassy, media, communication, public policy or other relevant professions. Or highly motivated and accomplished recent graduates with relevant degrees in areas such as politics, journalism or communication can also apply.
- Accurate and quick English writing skills: the job involves producing a range of reports and emails for a UK government audience, often daily.
- Confident public speaker with an ability to work well in large teams.

For British High Commission candidates, the Country Based Staff BHC Terms & Conditions will apply.
For other than BHC Candidates, salary will be all-inclusive of INR 75,359 per month plus 12% Provident Fund and 6% Superannuation.
Additionally, the BHC offers a great benefits package that includes annual domiciliary medical cover, plus a Group Hospitalisation Scheme with INR 500,000 floater cover for your immediate family which includes self, spouse/partner and children up to an age of 23 years and irrespective of age, only if with, physical or mental disability.
No relocation or any other related costs or assistance will be provided. FCDO does not pay for any travelling, accommodation & relocation expenses incurred and/or accept any financial risk, including cancellation or reschedule costs
Please note – BHC does not deduct tax at source and employees are required to ensure that any requirements of local income-tax law are complied with in full. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g., some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
