About us:

The British Embassy in Berne is part of a world-wide network representing British political, economic and consular interests.

We are recruiting a Foreign and Security Policy Intern, offering opportunities for an enthusiastic and motivated candidate to gain political engagement, reporting and administrative skills in a busy and high-performing diplomatic mission. This is a varied and challenging role as part of a supportive and ambitious team. It comes at a promising time for UK-Swiss and UK-Liechtenstein relations, on the back of enhanced cooperation leading up to, and since, the UK’s departure from the EU.

During the Internship you will:

  • Contribute political analysis by researching, briefing, engaging, lobbying and reporting on a broad range of foreign policy issues in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The successful applicant will also be the ‘lead’ on Artificial Intelligence, a role which will include delivering a UK-Swiss AI dialogue. As the successful applicant, you will develop a network of contacts in and beyond government, and be instrumental in realising opportunities presented by the UK Government’s foreign, defence, security and development vision and related strategies.
  • You will support broader bilateral engagement with Switzerland and Liechtenstein, in particular to increase cooperation under the UK-Swiss Strategic Dialogue process. The Dialogue itself is an annual fixture, setting the direction of the bilateral relationship across foreign policy, prosperity and trade, among other areas.
  • Organise visits of UK Ministers and officials to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, where the Foreign and Security Policy team has the lead. This includes initially supporting, then leading and coordinating arrangements, including programme and briefing content and logistics. It requires excellent self-organisation and flexibility – and, at times, resilience and an ability to work fast under pressure.
  • You will also provide general support, including monitoring of media, provision of internet translations, and maintenance of administrative tracking tools which monitor progress across team and wider embassy work.

Our Ideal candidate will have:

  • Proficiency in written and spoken English  and German(C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

  • Good, clear and engaging written and oral communication skills.

  • Knowledge of Swiss foreign policy.

  • Track record of academic achievement.

  • Strong research and analytical skills.

It will be plus:

  • Proficiency in written and spoken French (C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
  • Office experience.
  • Knowledge of international politics.
