Department for Business and Trade (DBT)

The British Embassy in Paris, part of the British Government’s France Network, is one of the UK’s most important diplomatic missions, representing British economic, political, security, and consular interests.

The British Embassy in Paris is now looking for a Head of Operations in its Department for Business and Trade (DBT) team that drive the UK’s prosperity agenda with France.

Main purpose of job:

In this role you will provide centralised operational leadership to the DBT team in France. Our team of around 35 people promote British Trade and Investment, seeking to make the UK the brand of choice in France, and to attract the investment needed to prepare our economy for the future.

As the Head of Operations, you will have responsibility for team business planning, working with the DBT France senior team to translate government priorities into France-focused strategies and plans. You will lead DBT France’s work on various cross-cutting projects and programmes and collaborate with a broad range of colleagues across DBT and the British Embassy in Paris.

What the role entails:

Lead DBT France’s business planning, including performance monitoring and evaluation:

  • Interpret and communicate government priorities, providing leadership to other team leaders to ensure priorities are reflected within the DBT France plans.
  • Oversee DBT France’s monitoring and evaluation processes, analysing the team’s overall performance and recommending actions for improvement where necessary.
  • Allocate and manage DBT France’s budget, ensuring we deliver maximum impact against our objectives and deliver value for money.
  • Engage regularly with the DBT Europe Chief Operating Officer to communicate plans and agree solutions to budget and resourcing challenges facing DBT France.

Provide cross-cutting operational leadership for DBT France

  • Proactively support the senior team on cross-cutting trade, investment and prosperity work – for example by developing Strategic Relationship Management tools that enable effective and regular engagement with our most important business and government contacts and providing support with briefings.
  • Act as a key conduit between France’s senior team (Country Director, Deputy Country Director, Head of Investment and Head of Trade) and other sections of the British Embassy in Paris, by leading contributions for the DBT France team on cross-cutting projects – such as policy input for the next UK-France summit, or operational input on British Embassy Paris events.
  • Liaise closely with HR at post, overseeing DBT France resourcing and supporting the senior team to manage recruitment into our team – including through the management of our internship programme, which provides valuable career opportunities to a diverse range of students.

Lead your team to deliver important events and activities.

  • In addition to your DBT France leadership role, lead and manage your own team, inspiring, supporting and motivating them to help you deliver your responsibilities.
  • Lead your team to collaborate with external partners to deliver key events in the DBT France calendar that strengthen our relationships with important contacts, including the UK-France Business Forum and Franco-British Trade and Investment Awards.
  • Actively contribute to the life of DBT in France and the British Embassy in Paris to make this an even better place to work. Engage positively in corporate activity such as the organisation of team strategy days and learning and development initiatives.

  • Full professional proficiency in English and French, including excellent writing skills* at a minimum of C2 Level according to CEFR*

  • Excellent interpersonal, team working and people management skills. The successful candidate will be capable of setting the direction for their team, gaining their trust and fostering a collaborative working environment.

  • Project management skills and the ability to multi-task. The successful candidate will be highly organised, flexible, able to work at pace, and able to manage competing priorities.

  • Experience of developing business plans that reflect organisational priorities.

  • Presentation skills, including strong written and verbal communication.

  • Understanding of and interest in British business and policy.

  • Investment and export promotion agency experience

  • Trade policy or market access experience

  • Events delivery

  • Financial processes and budget management

  • Data analysis and monitoring and evaluation
