The UK Mission to the UN & WTO in Geneva represents the interests and policies of the UK at many international organisations in Geneva and is recruiting a highly motivated Health Intern.

Main purpose of job:
The internship will offer a unique opportunity to support the Mission’s multilateral work as an integral part of the UK delegation to the UN, and in particular the World Health Organisation (WHO), under the guidance of senior staff. The intern will sit within the Health Team and provide support to the daily functioning of the team and its objectives. The internship will also offer the intern an opportunity to get insight into the work of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the Department of Health and Social Care, and to learn about working on multilateral issues in an international context.
A supervisor will guide the intern and provide on-the-job training and evaluation.
Roles and responsibilities:
We are looking for a highly motivated, flexible individual with excellent skills in organisation and communication (verbal and written).
- The successful candidate will have good analysis skills and demonstrate a strong interest in developing their experience in global health security and the UN.
- They will be expected to monitor meetings, press conferences and events at the WHO and the UN, draft reports from these meetings and, once cleared, circulate to relevant policy leads across government.
- They will take a leading role, with the support of the Mission’s events team, in organising health-related events and high-level visits.
- They will provide general administrative support to the health team, including monitoring the health team in-box and ensuring the dissemination of information to relevant UK Government departments and technical leads. Other administrative tasks may be assigned as required.
- The successful candidate will be encouraged to volunteer for corporate roles, such as joining the organising committee for the annual King’s Birthday Party (a key event in the UK Mission’s calendar) or other corporate committees/rosters that help ensure the effective running of the Mission.

Our Ideal Candidate shows:
- Fluent written and spoken English (C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages);
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field;
- A demonstrated interests in women’s health, health rights or similar;
- Experience in drafting, writing, and/or reporting;
- Excellent organisational skills;
- An open, co-operative attitude;
- IT literacy.

- Master’s degree or equivalent, ideally in the field of health, international development or international relations.

The UK Mission will offer the intern a monthly training allowance of 1,450 CHF. Please note that interns will need to arrange and pay for their own travel and accommodation, as well as any other living costs and are subject to Swiss taxes. This internship will be for a period of 11 months.
All applicants should have permission to live and work in Switzerland.
Applicants that have the right to live and work in Geneva and don’t require a visa sponsorship are: Nationals from United Kingdom, European Union and EFTA, along with Nationals of: Brunei Darussalam, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Principality of Andorra, Principality of Monaco, San Marino, Singapore and Vatican – these applicants are eligible to live and work in Switzerland as long as holding a full passport valid for at least 12 months.
Where applicable, we encourage successful applicants (if from Europe or the UK) to obtain an Insurance Card (EHIC or GHIC) prior to entering Switzerland.
The Mission offers a contribution to the payment of travel insurance for the duration of internship, in place of Private Swiss Health Insurance that includes health & accident cover for all interns.
The final appointment and commencement of internship will be dependent upon successful security clearance.
Learning & Development:
The UK Mission Geneva attaches great importance to the learning and development of its staff, with both formal and informal training and development opportunities available for all employees, in line with a personalised development plan. This learning and development offer is facilitated by the Mission’s L&D Committee, and supported by the L&D Champion.
A supervisor will guide the intern and provide on-the-job training and evaluation. Most development opportunities will come through the flow of work and through exposure to the WHO and the World Health Assembly as an integral member of the Global Health Team.
There is plenty of learning and development available in this role, with a generous annual allowance to invest in L&D. The calibre of colleagues and breadth of the mission means there is room for personal growth. You will also have the opportunity to understand and contribute to the corporate life of a busy diplomatic mission.
