Main Purpose of Job:
This role will help to design, build and deliver UK health policy collaboration with Brazil across multiple work steams. The role will cover a range of health topics, and work closely with colleagues in Economic, Political & Development, and Climate teams, the Science and Technology Network, and the Department for Business and Trade to deliver a co-ordinated Health strategy in Brazil that boosts bilateral collaboration, builds on a strong legacy of research co-operation, and enhances UK growth.
The successful candidate will use the UK’s status as an important partner to Brazil to build networks within the Brazilian Government, other Embassies, UN, NGOs, and private sector organisations, and use those relationships to achieve UK priorities, including by delivering impactful visits from senior interlocutors.
You will work with your peers to advise seniors in the Brazil Network on health issues, and help facilitate links that will shape national health policies in the UK and Brazil.
The FCDO Brazil Network works to deepen bilateral relations and achieve UK objectives. As well as the Embassy in Brasilia, we have Consulates in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Recife and Belo Horizonte. While this role is based in Brasilia, you will have the opportunity to travel to other parts of Brazil to fulfil your duties.
This is a new position, but builds upon substantial existing engagement and links with Brazil, including via an existing virtual team of colleagues working on health fields, which this role will be a key part of.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Coordinate the UK’s relationship on health policy issues with Brazil.
Lead on facilitating government-government programmes and policy initiatives that support the UK’s health initiatives, inform UK policy making, and position us well in multilateral fora.
Lead a network-wide comms campaign on health.
Working with the comms team and with inputs from colleagues working in relevant areas, effectively communication the scope and scale of the UK’s expertise and relationship with Brazil.
Build strong relationships with the Brazilian government across a range of ministries and deploy these to maximum effect. Use the resulting insights to advise the Embassy on our health portfolio, including identifying opportunities for growth and linked UK commercial opportunities in Brazil, as well as areas of potential for research. Co-ordinate a stakeholder engagement plan with colleagues to ensure a joined-up communication and engagement.
Identify and report on emerging developments in Health Policy, and identify opportunities for engagement and co-operation between the UK and Brazil. Develop a deep understanding of health priorities and areas of expertise in both countries to inform decision making both in the Brazil Network and in London-based departments.

- Experience of working in domestic Health Policy development, Life Sciences and/or global health policy (for example within the UN, NGOs, or Development research organisations).
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including fluency in both Portuguese and English.
- Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to manage multiple workstreams at one time
- Political understanding and an ability to handle complex information to make nuanced judgements in a fast-paced environment.
- Programme management experience

Language: English and Portuguese
Level of language required: Expert English and Portuguese (spoken and written).

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
