Main Purpose of Job:

The UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office works to create an open and stable international order. We aim to shape societies which are fair, just and which respect human rights. The Rule of Law Team in the British Embassy works to improve the human rights and governance situation in Mexico. We attempt to work with and influence the Mexican Government on priority areas such as gender rights, media freedom, forced disappearances, corruption, transparency, and the protection of human rights defenders. We support and strengthen civil society and those working to create fairer societies. 

This job contributes to that effort by supporting the Rule of Law Team in its efforts to improve the human rights and governance situation in Mexico. You will provide administrative support to the team and occasionally to the wider political section. This might include maintaining a network of contacts, organising events, drafting public communications, project management, budget management, and administrative tasks.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Political Work
1.    Engaging: Liaise with civil society organisations and Mexican Government Departments to set up meetings and invite contacts to events.
2.    Project administration: Support with the implementation of projects by organising activities, processing payments, and reporting on events.
3.    Logistics for visits and events: Book flights, hotels and organise transport for visitors to Mexico on security, justice and human rights related business. Find venues, book refreshments, book in guests, meet and greet guests for events.

Policy support
1. Provide other wide ranging policy support to the Rule of Law Team through research for reports, production of bios, help with translation and drafting where required.
2. Support the delivery of policy on human rights, security, and justice.

Administrative (including, but not exclusively):
1. Act as financial officer for the team, managing the budget effectively.
2. Responsible for the team’s forward look of upcoming events.
3. Organise meetings, including team meetings, booking rooms, logistic requirements, etc.

Line Management:
1. You will directly manage one intern and you will be responsible for maximising their performance and motivation. You will need to provide regular guidance, support, and feedback to ensure they perform at their best.

  • 1 (one) intern.
  • The team currently manages projects worth around £30k.

  • Degree level in relevant subjects such as Law, International Relations, Political Sciences, etc.
  • Fluent in Spanish and English (written and spoken).
  • The ability to prioritise and manage time effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: able to work well with in a team.
  • Have excellent communication skills relating to relationship building both internally and externally to the British Embassy.
  • Should be a proactive and creative self-starter with strong interpersonal skills who has the ability to learn quickly.
  • Be an honest and open person who works with integrity.

  • Experience of working with relevant topics: human rights, rule of law, governance, or anti-corruption issues.
  • Experience in managing budgets and project management.

Learning and Development Opportunities:

No formal training is required. However, the FCDO and British Embassy in Mexico are committed to continuous learning and development. The International Academy within the FCDO and the learning and development committee offer help to plan your learning and development. This can be in general areas such as a foundation course in diplomacy, or training in leadership, or in job-related areas such as human rights or understanding multilateral institutions.

Monday – Thursday 08:00 – 16:30, Friday 08:00 – 14:00

Working from Home: The role can offer home working for up to two days per week

Candidates must be able to live and work in Mexico in their own right. The successful candidate will be subject to a security clearance and professional reference checks.
