Main purpose of job:
The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is the UK government department responsible for promoting and financing international trade and development, and championing free trade. In Brazil, DBT operates within the British Embassy in Brasília, and Consulates in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Recife, with a team that works primarily through several sector-specific export promotion campaigns.
This position will be based at the British Consulate in Recife and you will work remotely with the Infrastructure and Energy Teams that are based in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, as well as supporting the Head of the Recife Consulate with day to day DBT work.
Working with the Infrastructure & Energy managers you will be responsible for assisting our trade promotion efforts for British and Brazilian companies, aiming at increasing UK exports and supporting inward and outward investment. This is an ideal position for someone with the ability to work collaboratively with an international team. The job will require the successful candidate to take responsibility for delivering both quickly and to a high standard.
You will assist in the development and management of a pipeline of commercial opportunities in Brazil for UK companies with a particular focus on, but not limited to, Water and Sanitation, Railways, Airports and Renewable Energy (including hydrogen and offshore wind). You will also be responsible for the team’s administrative tasks and for regularly updating our client-management database.
Roles and responsibilities:
Infrastructure (45% – remotely), Energy (45% – remotely) and Office Support 10%.
This is an exciting opportunity to work on improving bilateral trade and investment between the United Kingdom and Brazil, especially through supporting the increase in UK exports. The Infrastructure & Energy teams work to support high value UK and Brazilian companies with significant trade potential as well as large UK investors in Brazil.
Trade support:
- Answer general and diverse enquiries from Brazilian and UK stakeholders;
- Analyse the demands of the Infrastructure and Energy sectors and search for UK suppliers that offer matching solutions;
- Organise meetings and agendas for UK companies and internal stakeholders;
- Support and participate in meetings with Brazilian and UK companies, both virtually and in person;
- Organise visits and events for companies coming to Brazil, including elaborating briefings and scheduling meetings with potential partners and key industry bodies as well as supporting product launches;
- Provide overarching support to the infrastructure and energy teams, particularly around information management.
Trade promotion:
- Assist with logistical and administrative arrangements for official events such as trade fairs, trade missions, official visits (ministers/senior level contacts), seminars, and workshops;
- Support official visits both in the UK and in Brazil, including supporting colleagues to build programmes;
- Identify and contact prospective UK suppliers for commercial opportunities;
- Maintain an updated contact database and ensure impact and interactions are recorded on DBT’s database.
The position will suit an energetic team player who is motivated and a self-starter with an interest in the commercial sector. It will require a positive and proactive attitude that thinks in terms of unlocking opportunities for UK companies in Brazil.

The UK government promotes and encourages professional development. This is a full time job (36 flexible hours a week) working hours to be agreed. Core business hours are 09:00-17:00. Hybrid working is a possibility. The successful candidate will be expected to work from the Consulate in Recife; however, we operate with a flexible working model, with the possibility of working from home two days a week.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
