Department for Business and Trade (DBT)

Main purpose of job:

The successful candidate will provide commercial and administrative support to the various sectors within the Business and Trade Department of the British Consulate in Monterrey and the British Embassy in Mexico City. The jobholder will report to His Majesty’s Consul General in Monterrey and support the day-to-day operations of the commercial team based at the British Embassy in Mexico City and Consulate in Guadalajara.

The successful candidate will support British commercial interests in northern Mexico and promote cross-sector collaboration with trade and investment activities, support and develop relationships with UK and Mexican companies and deliver an effective programme of activities focused on highlighting UK expertise across several sectors.  The successful candidate will also undertake research and support both face-to-face events in Monterrey and virtual in Mexico City and Guadalajara.

Roles and responsibilities:

Contribute towards the Trade and Investment objectives of the Department of Business and Trade: (70%)

  • Support British commercial interests across northern Mexico in close collaboration with the Commercial section of the British embassy.
  • Participate in internal and external meetings to promote the UK offer and provide an overview of the Mexican market to UK investors.
  • Identify new business opportunities for British companies in northern Mexico.
  • Provide logistical support for in-person events, meetings and trade missions to the wider DBT team based in Mexico City:
    • Health and Life Sciences,
    • Security, Defence, Mining, Aerospace and Technology
    • Energy and Infrastructure
    • Education
    • Food and Drink and Agritech
    • Financial Services
  • Support colleagues and stakeholders in Monterrey to deliver projects and events.

Administrative support to His Majesty’s Consul General in Monterrey: (30%)

  • Provide administrative support to HM Consul General in Monterrey as needed, managing his agenda.
  • Organise and provide logistical support for virtual and in-person events, meetings and trade missions related to the Education sector in Monterrey.
  • Assist with the creation and edit of documents, presentations, reports, etc.
  • Assist the Monterrey team with internal efforts, engaging with colleagues throughout the region, and gathering information as needed.

  • Candidates must possess advanced written, communication and research skills.
  • Must be enrolled in an undergraduate programme or recently graduated (e.g. International Relations, Economics, Administration, International Business, Engineering on relevant field, etc.).
  • Availability to start their internship on the proposed date (Successful candidate will start the role by September 2024 or as soon as possible).
  • Proactive team player with strong inter-personal communication skills, attention to detail, and a strong desire to learn.
  • Ability to work effectively and deliver results.
  • High-level of competence in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Language requirements: 

Language: English and Spanish 

Level of language required:  Excellent verbal and written skills.

  • Experience or knowledge of British commercial interests in Mexico (or ability to gain knowledge quickly).
  • Experience or knowledge of database management and market research.
  • Experience or knowledge in customer service.
  • Innovative, curious mindset keen to take on what’s up for taking on new challenges.

The successful candidate will be subject to a security clearance and professional reference checks.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount. Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.

Working patterns:

Expectation is to work under a hybrid model in line with Embassy’s policy (3 days working from the office). 25 hours per week of work expected.

Candidate must be based in Monterrey.
