Who are we?
The British Consulate General (BCG) in Barcelona, Spain, is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. We are looking to recruit two Interns to join our team within Department for Business and Trade in BCG Barcelona. DBT is the UK Government’s department for economic growth. Its international arm has responsibility for promoting UK exports across the world, attracting foreign investment to the UK economy and helping to remove barriers to trade.
Main purpose of job:
This is an exciting opportunity to join the UK Government’s Department for Business and Trade (DBT) team in the British Consulate-General in Barcelona. The team forms part of the British Embassy in Spain network and the DBT Europe Network.
The selected candidates will support the team as part of either:
- DBT Europe’s Technology Campaign (a cross-Europe strategy led from Barcelona, coordinating trade promotion work at British embassies across Europe), or
- DBT Barcelona, supporting bilateral UK-Spain trade and investment in the digital, tech, telecoms, biotech, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and circular economy sectors.
Successful candidates will have opportunities to work in areas such as stakeholder engagement, event management, business reporting, market research, economic analysis and social media communications.
The internship provides an opportunity to gain valuable experience in a high-performing team operating in an international environment.
Roles and responsibilities:
Our interns will fulfil the following roles and responsibilities across exciting sectors, including digital, tech, telecoms, biotech, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and circular economy sectors:
- Business engagement: help the team to expand its network of contacts and strengthen relationships with UK and Spanish companies, with proactive engagement and responding to enquiries from UK companies looking to sell into Spain or Spanish companies looking to set up operations in the UK/Project support engagement. Our Technology Campaign intern will also support our Technology Campaign Lead to support the delivery of pan-European trade and investment focused activities.
- Events and visits: Contribute to the organisation, logistical support and delivery of high-profile UK business events and UK attendance at major trade fairs, as well as visits by UK ministers, ambassadors, officials and businesses to Spain/Europe.
- Analysis: Scanning news to identify companies with potential for exports or foreign direct investment; stakeholder mapping in key sectors; searching for frictions or barriers to trade and investment; market research to help the team identify commercial opportunities.
- Briefing: Building on own analysis, provide ad hoc factual briefing for the Ambassador, ministers and colleagues to feed into meetings, speeches, press articles, visits and events.
- External communications: Contribute to the design and content of the team’s social media activity and brochures of UK companies and work with DBT Europe Communications team (where applicable) to support internal communications and official briefings, as well as external social media.
- Corporate: Contributing to culture of the dual networks of British Embassy in Spain and Department for Business and Trade in Europe, through participation in internal meetings, learning and team-building initiatives.

Our Ideal Candidate shows:
- Full professional proficiency in English (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*);
- Written and spoken proficiency in Spanish (minimum B1, according to the CEFR framework*);
- Currently studying in a related field e.g. Business Management, International Relations, International Trade;
- Excellent communication – proficiency in conveying information clearly and concisely, both in written emails and reports, and orally in meetings;
- Interest in Trade and Technology;
- Dynamic and hardworking – proactive with ability to work under pressure;
- Highly motivated and strong willingness to learn;
- Team worker – ability to build and maintain relationships to work effectively with colleagues and external stakeholders;
- Analytical – ability to gather, analyse and interpret economic, trade and business data, to identify trends and opportunities;
- Organisational – ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritise and meet deadlines;
- Currently studying at a Spanish University where the student will remain in the same university degree for the duration of the internship period.

This is an internship position for curricular or extra-curricular credits as part of a student´s current university degree. This is a part-time internship offer of 6 months, with the possibility of renewal. The working hours are 25 hours per week, Monday to Friday between the hours of 09:00am and 14.00pm.
The successful candidate is subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance.
The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy based on gross annual salary.
The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
