Main purpose of job:
The British Embassy in San Jose, Costa Rica is part of a global network representing British political, economic, climate and consular interests overseas.
There are two internship positions: Communications and Climate
Communications: The intern will support the Communications team in strengthening the UK’s visibility in country with specific local audiences, including through the creation and implementation of communications initiatives for in-person events; creating content for our social media channels; and liaising with stakeholders. This is a challenging and engaging role, which will allow the successful candidate to gain valuable experience working for a diplomatic mission in Costa Rica, which also oversees Nicaragua.
The Climate: The climate intern will contribute to advancing UK priorities on climate and nature through tasks such as report writing, research, stakeholder engagement, and database management. We are looking for a proactive and detail-oriented student or early-career professional with a strong interest in sustainability and familiarity with international climate and nature frameworks. This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a diplomatic setting, offering valuable insight into the work of an embassy and its role in global climate action.
Roles and responsibilities:
Main Duties and Responsibilities (Communications):
• Draft social media posts on a range of topics for the Embassy’s digital platforms;
• Help monitor and analyse UK-related news in the local and international sphere;
• Research and develop scripts for videos and Stories;
• Create a range of creative content for social media, including video clips, explainers, memes and infographics;
• Assist in monitoring social media channels;
• Prepare promotional materials for events (invitations, flyers, etc.);
• Contribute with ideas and assist in planning events to deliver Embassy objectives;
• Provide general communications support, including updating of media contact lists.
Main Duties and Responsibilities (Climate)
• Prepare reports and briefing materials.
• Conduct research to support policy and programme development.
• Take notes during meetings and events.
• Maintain and update the climate and environment project database.
• Engage with stakeholders, including government, NGOs, and partners.
• Support planning and coordination of climate-related activities.
• Stay informed on international climate and nature frameworks.
• Collaborate with other embassy teams as required.

Essential on arrival:
Communications
- Candidates should be currently pursuing or have completed a university degree in any of the following areas including, but not limited to Journalism, Public Relations, Communications and Audiovisual Production, International Relations or Political Science.
- Candidate must be an active social media user, aware of trending content on platforms like Instagram and TikTok and up to date on best practices across a range of social media platforms;
- Must have strong research, writing and communications skills;
- Must have experience with software like Canva, CapCut or similar;
- Must be able to work independently and remotely, and must possess excellent attention to detail;
Climate
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Political Science, International Relations, Environmental Engineering, Law, or a related field.
- Strong research, writing, and analytical skills.
- Demonstrated interest in climate and environmental issues.
- Familiarity with key international frameworks and agreements on climate and nature.
- Ability to work independently and with attention to detail.
- Experience with data management; familiarity with Power BI is a plus

Applicants must have the legal status to live and work in Costa Rica at time of application.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list. If during the reserve period of 6 months the same or largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second of subsequent candidate.
