Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy in San Jose, Costa Rica is part of a global network providing a full range of services for Government partners and private sector stakeholders. We are looking for six interns that are interested in the following areas:

Communications: To support the Communications section in increasing public engagement with local audiences through the creation and implementation of diverse communications initiatives, with a strong focus on social media content.

Department for Business and Trade (DBT): To support the Business and Trade section in achieving its trade promotion and government engagement objectives.

Consular:  To support the Consular Section in a range of activities around the wellbeing and safety of British Residents and Visitors.

Climate: To support the Environment and Climate Change Policy Section in its objective to promote the positioning of the UK as a main partner for climate and environmental action. 

Roles and responsibilities:

Communications Intern (x 2): The intern will support the political and communications team across a wide range of areas including media relations, foreign policy research and digital outreach and will assist the team in media analysis, content creation and management of the Embassy’s social media channels, among other related tasks.

Department for Business and Trade (DBT) Intern (x 2):  To support the Business and Trade section in a range of activities including market research, organization of webinars, updating databases, briefings on key economic, social and political issues of interest to the UK, support and research in understanding trade agreements and the promotion of British businesses in the market, support during company and embassy organized events among others.

Consular Intern (x1): To support the Consular Section section in a range of activities including developing the department’s prevention activity, updating databases, research and information development.

Climate Intern (x1): The intern will support the Environment and Climate Change Policy Section across a wide range of areas including, but not limited to, stakeholder engagement across different sectors working on climate action, organisation and participation in activities related to international cooperation funds, research and briefing on environment and climate change matters. 

For all internship positions:

  • Candidates should be currently pursuing or have completed a university degree in any of the following areas including, but not limited to International Relations, Political Science, International Trade, Law, Journalism, Human Resources, Environmental Management, Public Relations, Communications and Audiovisual Production.
  • Must have excellent computer skills, particularly MS Outlook and MS Office packages.
  • Must be able to work independently and remotely.
  • Candidate must possess excellent organisational, interpersonal, and communications skills.
  • Fluency in Spanish and English (this will be assessed before panel interview stage)

Additionally, for Climate internship position:

  • Candidates should possess a solid understanding of key international climate and environment agreements and discussions.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience in public policy analysis and the ability to produce high quality executive reports.
  • Strong communication skills, a keen interest in climate policy, and a proactive approach to research and analysis are essential.

Additionally, for Communications internship position:

  • Potential communications interns should be active social media users, aware of trending content on platforms like Instagram and TikTok and up to date on best practices across a range of social media platforms.
  • Candidates should also be versed in using CapCut, Canva or similar software.

Applicants must have the legal status to live and work in Costa Rica at time of application.
    
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.   
    
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list. If during the reserve period of 6 months the same or largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second of subsequent candidate.   

This is an internship and, as such, it will be designed around the individual’s desire to learn and develop. It will offer the right candidate the opportunity to understand how a diplomatic mission operates and see the type of work we do.

Line managers will set the working pattern in agreement with the intern. The maximum hours worked per week are 24 hours for a period of 3 months, with the possibility of an additional 3 months where appropriate, for a maximum of 9 months altogether. The Embassy will provide the Intern with a subsidy of $300 per month.
