Do you want to enter the world of international affairs? Are you curious about what relations between the UK and Germany look like in practice? Interested in a future career where you can make a difference as part of a fast-moving, high profile and international environment? Then join us as an Intern at the UK’s Embassy and Consulates in Germany!

We aim to be a diverse and inclusive employer, welcoming to people of all backgrounds. The senior leadership is committed to ensuring that we are a supportive and fair place to work.

We have several internships available throughout 2024-2025, based at one of the Germany Network’s three locations at the British Embassy in Berlin and the Consulates-General in Munich and Düsseldorf.

During your internship, you will have the chance to work with colleagues across the whole team and become actively involved in a variety of areas and issues through analytical, organisational, communication and administrative tasks. You will have a manager to support you throughout your internship and you will gain insights and first-hand experience supporting international work across your assigned role.

In addition to those listed above, you might find yourself:

  • Researching policy for a strategy paper or briefing for a Minister or Ambassador;
  • Planning and helping to deliver events, receptions and VIP visit programmes;
  • Researching and drafting communications e.g. for articles, interviews, speeches and social media;
  • Supporting the planning and coordination of key meetings with relevant stakeholders, producing meeting readouts and carrying out other administrative tasks.

The location, starting date, and length of the internship are flexible (subject to the number of applicants and positions available) and you will have the chance to indicate your preference as part of your application. Preference will be given to those who are available to start in May 2024.

You’ll work in one of four teams:

1. Business and Trade (DBT)
Our mission at DBT is to encourage trade and investment between the UK and Germany and improve market access for businesses. This is critical to our economies, supporting millions of jobs, driving economic growth and improving living standard across the globe, whilst at the same time promoting wider goals – e.g.  improving economic security, championing diversity and inclusion in how we do business, or tackling climate change and delivering Net Zero. For more information about DBT’s objectives, see here.

2. Public Diplomacy & Internal Politics (PDIP)
PDIP uses comms to multiply the impact of our work and ensure that we reach the right audiences. Our teams also monitor German domestic politics and host events to advance our bilateral relationship. We are offering two internship opportunities;

Our Comms interns will help to draft social media copy, film promotional videos, write press releases and plan media campaigns. In the first half of 2024, you’ll focus on the Euros football tournament, and in the second half on our other bilateral priorities.
Our Internal Political interns will help us to monitor German domestic politics. You’ll research political figures, analyse polling data and join us to attend party conferences. You’ll also help to design and deliver creative events that help us get important people in the room.

3. Policy, Science and Global Issues
Sitting at the centre of the Germany Network, you’ll help plan engagement and travel and will play a key role in organising events for senior contacts. You will work with colleagues across the Embassy on a range of projects for the Network such as ministerial visits, policy conferences, and this summer the Men’s European Football Championships. We are also seeking an intern to support the Berlin Embassy and Düsseldorf Consulate implement the UK/Germany Energy and Climate Partnership, particularly in the areas of renewables and hydrogen.

The UK Science and Innovation Network (SIN) leads on developing science and innovation partnerships and deploying science diplomacy around the world, across topics such as digital technologies, climate change and health. In this role you will work with the SIN team in the Berlin Embassy and Düsseldorf Consulate to track and report on Germany’s science and innovation developments, to help communicate around UK science excellence, and to support projects that deepen our UK-German bilateral cooperation in science, technology and innovation.

4. Consular Services
Our mission in the Consular Services team in Germany is to provide the best consular assistance to British people in need, whether visiting here or resident in Germany. You will be working alongside brilliant colleagues based in Berlin, Düsseldorf and Munich, as well as other German-speaking posts further afield. With the Euro 2024 tournament around the corner, you’ll be assisting the Germany Consular team in ensuring that British fans will have a fun, yet safe time while in Germany, building and maintaining key relationships with external stakeholders in local authorities as well as reporting to the Embassy on the network’s response to the Euro 2024 tournament.

Working in Consular Services with people who require help every day can be tough, but also very rewarding. You will also be working alongside the consular team in providing efficient and modern assistance to British people in Germany. Tasks will include assisting in issuing emergency travel documents, interaction with British people on various issues, answering enquiries, general administration and working alongside colleagues who deal with issues in the areas of arrest / detention, victim of crime, death, child welfare, welfare and homelessness, and general crisis.
