The British Embassy Baghdad has a vacancy for Technical Works Maintenance Manager, job grade Executive Officer (EO) for the Technical Works Group (TWG).
The jobholder will be responsible for managing all maintenance activities across the British Embassy Baghdad compound, implementing and reviewing maintenance schedules and tasks. They will lead a busy, diverse team of tradesmen, including driving a strong safety culture across the team.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Manage Senior Supervisors in the co-ordination of all maintenance task for the properties and grounds located at the British Embassy in Baghdad. These include, but are not limited to painting, building repairs, electrical, air conditioning, diesel generators, and switchgear.
- Review and maintain progress of works against a number of areas to deliver compliance to UK standards.
- Oversee risk assessments, ensuring that best practices are followed, and upskilling team members as required.
- Assign tasks and responsibility to Supervisors, monitoring their performance and ensuring quality of end products.
- Identify areas for improvement in existing systems, streamlining processes, and communicating changes across the Embassy.
- Quality assure all completed works to confirm they are compliant with Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) Guidance Documents and best practice.
- Managing Health and Safety (H&S) training for all staff, through mentoring by Supervisors, Toolbox talks, and third-party providers.
The above list is not exhaustive, and the jobholder will be required to be flexible and take on other ad hoc tasks as required, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any other response to a crisis.

Eligibility:
If you are selected for this position, we will be able to employ you as long as:
- We can obtain the appropriate level of local and UK security clearance for you; and
- You have (or be willing to obtain) the right to live and work in Iraq. Candidate’s residence permit and work permit, and the expense to obtain them, will be their own responsibility – the Embassy does not provide residence or work permits. If you have any questions about residency and/ or visa requirements, you should contact the relevant Iraqi Government Ministry.
- Demonstrable experience in a similar Facilities Maintenance/Facilities Management position, ideally for at least three (3) years
- Demonstrable experience in managing a large and varied team of tradesman and labourers.
- Knowledge of Health and Safety (H&S) best practices, including risk assessments, safe systems of work, and mandatory legislation
- Ability to work in fast-paced, high-profile environments, deliver to deadlines, delegate and problem solve.
- Flexible, resilient, decisive, and calm under pressure. Demonstrate an ability to understand competing priorities and make judgement calls on when to use own initiative and when to consult with seniors.
- Strong at problem solving and able to anticipate and take initiative.
- Excellent on customer service skills. Courteous and considerate when dealing with internal and external stakeholders. Able to show discretion in handling sensitive matters.
- Collaborative in their approach to colleagues and stakeholders.
- Fluent communication skills in English and Arabic, spoken and written. Able to express ideas and messages clearly and concisely both orally and in written communication.
- Able to demonstrate they have a high level of IT skills and proficient in using Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
- Holds a degree in engineering, ideally master’s degree or higher.
- Holds a recognised health and safety qualification, such as NEBOSH or equivalent.
- Understanding of budget management principles.
- Experience maintaining and inspecting bulk fuel storage.

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including up to 20 days of annual leave (calculated pro-rata).
The role grade is Executive Officer (EO), with a base salary of US$ 2,387 per month. This base salary is paid 13 times a year. In addition, the role attracts a security allowance payable as part of this package. This security allowance is subject to review and may be altered or withdrawn at any time.
No accommodation nor relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.
This position is for a full-time employment on a permanent contract basis. Employment is also subject to a 90-day probationary period.
Conditioned working hours are 38 hours per week. Normal working hours are from 08:00 to 16:00 on Sundays to Wednesdays and from 08:00-14:00 on Thursdays. The jobholder should be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will also be dictated by operational needs and may involve working out of hours (evenings/ weekends).
There may be flexibility for starting and leaving times as long as conditioned hours are completed. This will be considered based on operational requirements and in agreement with the line manager, and in line with FCDO and Embassy policies.
The Embassy encourages a culture of continuous learning. Training will be given in the role. All employees have access to the Civil Service Learning platform, which gives access to training to improve job specific skills. Employees are entitled to a minimum number of annual training days.
