Main Purpose of Job:

UK Defence & Security Exports (DSE) is the part of the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) that helps the UK’s defence and security industries export their products and deepen their partnerships. Working closely with industry, other UK government departments and the Indonesian government, you will be responsible for growing the UK’s trade and investment relationship with Indonesia in cyber security and digital capabilities by helping UK companies to win new business here.

It is an exciting time in the digital and cyber space in Indonesia. The rapid growth of Indonesia’s information and communication technology industry has driven unprecedented transformation with the integration of digital technology into all areas of business. This accelerated pace of change creates opportunities for enhanced efficiencies, data driven insights and improved customer service. Yet there are also challenges, including increased data security risks and a rise in cyber threats and incidents across large businesses and public organisations. 

Within the UK, the digital ecosystem combines technical expertise and a world-leading research base with a history of cyber security excellence and leadership on developing global standards. It has an established, expert and innovative industry made up of companies across a full range of capabilities, delivering digital solutions that enable rapid, data-driven decision making. This ensures UK industry is ideally placed to provide expert advice and services alongside advanced capabilities to help stakeholders across the Indonesian government, defence and critical national infrastructure to achieve their goals.

The job holder will work to the Head of UK Defence and Security Exports in Indonesia and will lead on developing a cyber security and digital capabilities exports strategy, underpinned by a robust pipeline of export opportunities across the government and commercial sector. This includes championing our cyber security and digital capabilities offer to customers across Law Enforcement, National Security, Government Departments and Enterprises, Critical National Infrastructure, Telecommunications, the Military and Space. The development of Indonesia’s New Capital City also offers a unique opportunity for UK cyber security and digital solutions suppliers to partner on this innovative project.

You will act as a trusted advisor to support UK companies on routes to market drawing on your experience of the most effective ways of partnering and doing business here. You will also seek to position the UK as a partner of choice for cyber security and digital capabilities, creating and curating bespoke offers for customers in Indonesia, running trade missions and pitching UK companies to address identified capability gaps.

What the Jobholder will be Expected to Achieve:

  • Identify and promote business opportunities in Indonesia for UK firms across cyber security and digital capabilities and develop a pipeline of projects through market intelligence, research, company engagement and relationship management of stakeholders. Support UK business to secure these projects.
  • Lead on other related areas in the defence and security exports arena such as electronic warfare, battlespace integration, Big Data, AI, protection of critical national infrastructure and space solutions, scoping opportunities and developing plans to grow our activity within them.
  • Develop sector knowledge, both of UK capability (supply) and Indonesian requirements (demand).
  • Support development of the UK commercial offer for Indonesia’s New Capital City (IKN), working in partnership with UK industry, to ensure cyber security and digital solutions are effectively incorporated and promoted. Work closely with other parts of the Embassy to embed the cyber security and digital capabilities offer as part of the wider UK pitch.
  • Proactively support and deliver trade missions, events, activities, webinars and forums in support of identifying business opportunities, and working with DBT/embassy marketing teams to showcase the UK offer.
  • Develop a network of contacts within the Indonesian military, police, government, security agencies and the private sector to develop in-depth knowledge of cyber and digital projects in the pipeline and future Indonesian requirements.
  • Relationship manage and provide expert advice and practical assistance for relevant UK companies, which have both the capability and appetite to secure contracts in Indonesia.
  • Proactively build relationships with embassy colleagues to identify synergies between trade promotion and wider UK Government objectives, including UK Ministry of Defence, trade policy, investment, UK Export Finance, UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, Overseas Development Assistance programmes.
  • Work closely with the DBT team in the UK, in particular the Security and Cyber Security Team in UK DSE to cultivate opportunities and expand UK companies interested in the market.
  • Identify, prioritise and work to resolve market access barriers in the cyber and digital sector to unlock business opportunities for UK organisations.
  • Support inward and outward visits of senior officials and Ministers as necessary, contributing to programmes and ensuring UK business features prominently. This may include supporting areas that fall outside of our core business area but are in support of wider DBT objectives.
  • Provide support to priority projects within the team as required.
  • Corporate: All staff are expected to participate in wider Embassy activities which can include active work on various committees and other corporate roles, as well as play a role in crisis management activities on an ad-hoc basis.

We are seeking a motivated self-starter who can demonstrate a proactive and flexible approach to identifying trends and opportunities and developing plans to capitalise on these. You will need excellent interpersonal and communications skills to build strong relations within the Embassy and with senior stakeholders at the regional and national level as well as with UK and Indonesian cyber security companies.

In addition:

  • 2 years+ professional experience working in roles related to cyber security and digital capabilities, in either government or the private sector
  • Knowledge relevant to the role, including a good understanding of Indonesia’s cyber security and digital environment – including key stakeholders, capability requirements, threats and opportunities for collaboration
  • Experience of doing business in Indonesia, including an understanding of procurement practices
  • Experience working on trade and/or investment, including an understanding of business development and how companies operate overseas
  • Evidence of self-motivation, professionalism and the ability to work under minimal supervision
  • An ability to think strategically, taking an analytical and innovative approach to work
  • Strong problems-solving skills, with the ability to view a problem from many angles and propose considered solutions
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to develop and lead work, unsupervised when required
  • Evidence of adaptability and ability to prioritise against competing, challenging tasking
  • Good communicator at all levels, both spoken and written, with evidence of completing timely and accurate written information in English
  • Computer literate, working with Microsoft Windows and able to manage information effectively with available computer system
  • Strong events and project management skills and exceptional teamwork abilities
  • A proven track record of successful relationship management with internal and external stakeholders, including those at senior level
  • You will need excellent interpersonal and communications skills to build strong relations within the Embassy and with senior stakeholders at the regional and national level as well as with UK and Indonesian companies

Language Requirements:

  • Excellent working levels in English and Bahasa Indonesia, both written and spoken
  • Level of language required: Fluent

  • Existing network of contacts within the Indonesian cyber security and digital sectors
  • Experience working with the military and/or police
  • Familiarity with the UK and UK cyber and digital sectors
  • Experience of working on large scale events, arranging visit programmes for delegations

Working Patterns: 

Normal working hours are 39.5 (gross) per week: 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM from Monday to Friday. The team operates a ‘core hours’ policy of 10:30AM to 2:30PM with individual flexibility around that and we are open to requests to work condensed hours, subject to business need.

British Embassy Jakarta supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering and is committed to staff maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Some evening and weekend work is required on occasion. Embassy Standard Terms and Conditions apply and provide for time outside of working hours to be compensated through Time-of-in-Lieu. The job involves travel, including to the UK, regionally and within Indonesia. A willingness and ability to travel is required.

No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. The Embassy will sponsor the visa applications for non-Indonesian candidates should they be selected for the role based on the sift and interview process.

Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment checks. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy Jakarta is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local employment law. In relation to this, the successful candidate will need to arrange for his/her own Police Certificate.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.
