The British Embassy Amman has a vacancy for a Plumber, job grade S1, on a fixed term contract for two (2) years.

The Plumber plays a key role in delivering Estates services and will work to the Technical Works Officer (TWO) as part of the Technical Works Group (TWG) to complete day-to-day maintenance tasks to schedule and on time taking pride in a job well done every time. You will undertake the day-to-day maintenance and repair of building services installations, including hot water systems, solar powered and recyclable water and waste systems.

The jobholder will assist and support the TWO with a particular focus on applying knowledge and skills to record and report on status and condition of fixtures and fittings. This is to enable appropriate information to be fed into reports including recommendations concerning future maintenance of all plumbing and water assets. The jobholder is also responsible for keeping records of work done, working as part of a trade team, delivering against daily work schedules and tasks, and acting on feedback from customers.

This is a busy, skilled trade role that calls for an experienced, well-organised, self-starter with drive, initiative, and excellent technical skills and recognised skilled trade qualification. The role requires someone who can deliver customer focussed day-to-day plumbing maintenance requirements, competent in decision-making, and able to access and influence the right support from their manager and the team.

It is a rewarding role for a candidate interested in testing and improving their established trade skills in a unique environment. You will work to the Embassy’s health, safety, and welfare standards for the benefit of all staff at the Embassy in a ‘zero harm’ culture. You will help reduce the Embassy’s carbon footprint through greater use of renewable energy, reduction in waste and the increase of sustainable practices. This role has been established following a major restructure to the Estates Team and the candidate should be able to manage continued change with a positive attitude. 

 

Duties and responsibilities:

– Day-to-day maintenance of Estate plumbing, heating, and water system assets for the Embassy, comprising of Embassy Compound, Ambassador’s Residence, and leased accommodation units in Amman

  • To undertake, as directed, the planned preventative maintenance (PPM) programme, projects, refurbishments, and react to Plumbing & Water Systems breakdowns or faults in a timely, professional, and customer focused manner. Help team to problem solve plumbing and heating related tasks, providing expert knowledge and guidance.
  • Ensure daily tasks are completed to standard and on time, including ad hoc maintenance requests. Work to enhance the facilities and remedial or urgent works identified. Typically, duties include routine maintenance, construction, test & inspection, undertaking full building Plumbing & Water Systems renewals (including Potable, Grey & Foul/ Sewerage), fault finding, repairs to installations, fitting accessories, and modification or replacement of Plumbing & Water System components in commercial buildings and special locations (swimming pools, etc.).
  • As part of the Technical Works Group (TWG), take ownership of Plumbing & Water Systems projects, repairs, and renewals, producing technical reports, accurate time frames for completion of works, outlining all resources required, start date, end date, project milestones, and dependencies. Liaise with technical and non-technical colleagues to provide updates on works progress.
  • Knowledge and ability to work on the boiler system, boiler pumps, and solar water heating systems in terms of installation, maintenance, and solving problems.
  • Knowledge and ability to work on water treatment devices of all types in terms of installation, maintenance, and solving problems.
  • Aid the Technical Works Officer (TWO) in production of comprehensive bills of materials and estimates of costs for high quality Plumbing & Water Systems components, labour, and materials. Purchase the necessary materials to ensure that appropriate and satisfactory repairs and maintenance are carried out.
  • Oversee work of external contractors providing maintenance or works to Estate assets, ensuring technical competence, adherence to health and safety risk assessments and safe working practices. Inspect work as it is done or completed, checking it meets UK safety standards and specifications. Reporting to Technical Works Assistant if this is not the case.
  • Contribute to the Embassy’s Climate Goals through implementing plumbing and heating works associated with the recent Energy Audit. Identify opportunities that will reduce water wastage by halting use of inefficient components or practices, reducing leaks, and contributing to environmental sustainability and potential cost savings.

– Health, safety, and statutory compliance

  • Ensure works completed by yourself or external contractors are compliant with UK standards and H&S regulations and that FCDO guidelines are understood and followed.
  • To be responsible for the safe use of a range of portable tools, ladders, and equipment to enable duties of the role to be undertaken.
  • Working at height and outside work may be required on occasion, including on high-risk plant (e.g., sewerage plant).
  • Role model the ‘zero harm’ culture at BE Amman by adhering to H&S guidelines, always working safely. Understand when to raise risks higher and seek guidance on best practice.

– Communication and engagement

  • Working with the Technical Works Officer to ensure that estate works that affect colleagues are properly planned.
  • Keeping customers up to date on progress of projects or maintenance requests and dealing with any complaints or feedback.

– Continuing professional development

  • In order to deliver work to the highest standards, keep and maintain a record of continuing professional development (CPD), recording at least 15 hours per year, to include upskilling where agreed. Instil a culture of continuous improvement, customer service, and professionalism.
  • Demonstrate continuous improvement in all areas of work to achieve best value for money, safety compliance, and standards of build.
  • Focus on learning and development and being open to developing new skills, experience, and knowledge. Share lessons learned and respond positively to feedback, learning from any mistakes while wanting to improve performance.

– Resources managed

  • Necessary tools and equipment to successfully do your job and keeping these neat, tidy, and in good working order.
  • Keep stock of plumbing and heating items and components in TWG storeroom neat, tidy, and well organised, ensuring there is sufficient stock held always bearing, stock records and accurate and up to date and keeping in mind value for money and good stock rotation practices.

The above list is not exhaustive, and the jobholder will be required to be flexible as specific responsibilities could change in the future and this would be at the discretion of Senior Management and agreed with the jobholder. The job description may be reviewed to meet changes in business needs. The jobholder may also take on other ad hoc tasks as required, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any other response to a crisis.

As such, a reasonable working level of communication skills in English, both written and oral, is also needed.

Eligibility:

If you are selected for this position, we will be able to employ you as long as:

  • You have the right to live and work in Jordan; and
  • You obtain and maintain the appropriate level of security clearance.

  • A minimum of a recognised Skilled Trade qualification in a relevant plumbing, heating, or water maintenance field.
  • Proven experience with relevant certification in one or more of the following areas: health and safety compliance, maintenance works, refurbishment projects, building works [first and second fix] or facilities management.
  • Relevant experience in a similar estates / trades customer-facing role, ideally for at least three (3) years.
  • Reasonable working level communication skills in English (both oral and written).
  • Highly organised and able to deal with challenging situations, confident in understanding and meeting scheduled day-to-day tasks and triaged, ad-hoc or emergency requests.
  • Excellent team working skills including evidence of working collaboratively with multicultural colleagues.
  • Must hold a Jordanian driving license with no current points or outstanding fines.

  • Knowledge of UK Health and Safety legislation related to buildings and estates.

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable gross salary of JOD 945 per month based on a 40 hours per week.

Salary will be paid in gross, and you are expected to comply with your tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the local authorities. If exceptionally you are not liable to pay Jordanian tax, you will receive a net salary, which is minus the deduction of an equivalent level of local tax. Further information on this will be provided at interview if necessary.

This role is for a full-time employment on a fixed term contract basis for two (2) years. The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-day probationary period (as appropriate). The appointment is subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances. The selected candidate must have a right to live and work in Jordan.

Normal working hours for this role are from 08:00-16:00 from Sundays to Thursdays, with half an hour for breaks. The jobholder should be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will also be dictated by operational needs and may involve working out of hours (evenings/ weekends). It is expected that the jobholder will be part of an on-call team, for which an additional allowance will be paid.

The package includes a good level of health insurance and a friendly, English-speaking work environment. We offer opportunities to develop professional skills through our Learning & Development offer. Leave entitlement is 25 days (on pro rata basis) plus 14 public holidays.

The Embassy follows a 70-20-10 model of learning. Your Line Manager will help you develop a personalised L&D plan and will share opportunities, resources, and guidance to ensure you have any necessary learning for the role with ability to achieve full potential.

You are expected to have a proactive approach to your own learning, and you will be expected to be able to quickly achieve relevant technical skills for the job and be able to prove at least 15 hours of continuing professional development per year to maintain those skills. You will also undergo crisis training, taking part in desk-based crisis exercises, and standing ready to support if a real crisis occurs.
