The British Embassy Amman has a vacancy for a Political Adviser on a fixed term contract of 2 years (renewable).
This is a key leadership role at the heart of the Embassy’s Political & Governance Team, contributing to the UK-Jordan bilateral relationship.
You will deliver on joint UK Jordan priorities, provide valuable insight and analysis on Jordan’s domestic and international priorities, and support the engagement of senior UK government stakeholders with their Jordanian counterparts.
You will build and maintain a strong network of contacts across Jordanian diplomatic, political, parliamentary and civil society landscape to support understanding and analysis of the local context and political dynamics.
You will lead on the UK’s relationship with key Jordanian institutions, such as parliament – building relationships, leading engagement and identifying trends and risks. You will also contribute to UK support for Jordan’s political modernisation agenda to build a more representative, accountable and responsive political system. This includes advising on the Embassy’s political modernisation work aiming to strengthen parliamentary scrutiny, support the development of political parties and improve citizen engagement, particularly for women and youth.
Operating at the junction of governance delivery and domestic politics, you will ensure our programming, engagement and reporting reinforce each other and deliver real progress in a complex, sensitive political environment.
Duties and responsibilities:
Political analysis:
Provide reporting, insight and political analysis to senior stakeholders. Identify key and relevant developments in Jordan’s political landscape, including on Human Rights, analyse and explain these while identifying risks, opportunities, and implications for the UK.
Lead concise reporting on political developments that affect programme delivery, identifying issues relating to Parliament, political parties, and the enabling environment for reform. Provide timely, decision-ready political economy analysis (what is feasible, with whom, and when) to keep engagement and delivery politically informed and adaptive.
Inform and support senior engagements and strategic priorities on areas of UK-Jordan collaboration across the breadth of the UK-Jordan partnership.
Deliver and quality-assure briefings, policy submissions, and visit plans for colleagues, working across the embassy.
Work collaboratively to ensure joined-up analysis and delivery where domestic politics and governance intersect with wider priorities.
External Engagement & Building Networks:
Own relationship with key democratic institutions, including National Assembly, Senate and human rights bodies. Build relationships, monitor developments, advise on senior engagement, identify news, trends and potential risks to UK priorities.
Build and sustain effective working relationships across government, political actors, civil society and the diplomatic & donor community. Conduct stakeholder management and convening that helps to deliver on joint UK-Jordan priorities.
Advise the Ambassador and senior UK government stakeholders on who and how to engage with the Jordanian political system, advising on risk and wider implications for UK interests.
Regular engagement with key political stakeholders, producing clear readouts and identifying implications for UK interests.
Support the Governance Adviser to work with external counterparts, implementers and like‑minded partners to steer the direction of governance programming, unblock progress through relationships, and keep governance and domestic politics strands mutually-reinforcing.
Maintain live stakeholder mapping and advise on risks, opportunities and reform feasibility.
Support on wider Embassy delivery
Contribute to the Crisis Committee, supporting Embassy response to a crisis in Jordan or the wider region.
Play an active and supportive role to the wider Embassy delivery, taking on responsibility for key activities and support of wider Embassy events, including the high-profile annual King’s Birthday Party.

Working Hours and Remuneration
The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a starting pay of 2564 JOD per month based on 37 hours per week.
Salary will be paid in gross, and you are expected to comply with your tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the local authorities. If exceptionally you are not liable to pay Jordanian tax, you will receive a net salary, which is minus the deduction of an equivalent level of local tax. Further information on this will be provided at interview if necessary.
This role is for a full-time employment on a fixed term contract basis for two years. The successful candidate will be subject to a 90 probationary period. The appointment is subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances. The selected candidate must have the right to live and work in Jordan.
Normal working hours at the Embassy are Sundays to Wednesdays from 08:00-15:30 and Thursdays from 08:00-15:00. The Embassy operates a flexible working policy that allows staff to work different hours as well as allowing staff to work from home one day a week, based on operational requirements and agreement with the line manager, and in line with FCDO and Embassy policies.
