The British Embassy Amman has a vacancy for a Porter/ Delivery Driver, job grade S3, on a fixed term contract for two (2) years.
As part of the Logistics Team, the Porter/ Delivery Driver will undertake the day-to-day portering of goods and items around our Estate. The role requires someone who can deliver customer focussed portering requirements, able to follow instructions safely and securely, and provide the right support to their manager and the team.
This is a busy role that calls for a well-organised person with drive and excellent team working skills. The Porter/ Delivery Driver plays a key role in the safe delivery of a wide range of letters, goods, and packages around the Embassy and its Estate, including delivery of letters or items on occasions to Jordanian government ministries or organisations. They will complete day-to-day tasks to schedule and on time, taking pride in a job well done every time. The role is responsible for working as part of a wider Logistics Team, safely lifting and handling sometimes heavy items, delivering letters and packages on time and securely, delivering against daily work schedules and tasks, and acting on feedback from customers.

You will work to the Embassy’s health, safety, and welfare standards for the benefit of all staff at the Embassy in a ‘zero harm’ culture. You will help reduce the Embassy’s carbon footprint through greater use of renewable energy, reduction in waste and the increase of sustainable practices. This role has been established following a major restructure to the Corporate Services Team and the candidate should be able to manage continued change with a positive attitude.
Duties and responsibilities:
– Day-to-day portering of goods, letters, and packages
- Assist the Estates Officer, Estates Assistant, or Technical Works Officer with routine portering tasks on compound, managing your schedule with the Logistics Officer to ensure all requests can be completed to time and satisfaction of the customer.
- Using the Embassy ‘Luton’ van; move furniture between properties/ offices and the current storage warehouse. Maintain an inventory of furniture in the warehouse facility and Embassy storage. Monitor and report on any damaged items. Report stock of furniture levels at the warehouse to the Estates Assistant.
- Deliver domestic household ‘floats’ ready for new arrivals, checking float list to ensure all items are there and checking again on collection, recording any missing items, and informing the Community Liaison Officer (CLO) or your manager as soon as possible.
- Working with the Head of Protocol and Government Relations to collect notes verbales, letters, or documents from the Embassy and deliver by car to relevant Jordanian government ministries to strict agreed deadlines. Collect items from the same Ministries to be delivered to the Embassy.
- Collect from Embassy gate delivery of diplomatic bags, goods, or items and deposit in Embassy post room. Help Corporate Services (CS) Assistant to open and distribute items to pigeon holes or offices, as necessary.
- Assist His Majesty’s Ambassador’s (HMA) Residence Team to set up for large events. Take instruction from the Residence Manager or Event Organiser on moving furniture and items around safely and efficiently. Working with the Residence team.
- Help team to problem solve logistical issues, providing expert knowledge and guidance. Take corrective action where this is not the case.
- Contribute to the Embassy’s Climate Goals by identifying opportunities that will improve energy efficiency adding to environmental sustainability and potential cost savings.
– Health, safety, and statutory compliance
- Ensure tasks completed by yourself are compliant with H&S regulations and that FCDO guidelines are understood and followed.
- Be prepared to undertake heavy lifting training and employ safe practices when moving items, including use of specialist lifting equipment you will be required and trained to use.
- Responsible for the safe use of a range of portable tools, ladders, and equipment to enable duties of the role to be undertaken.
- Role model the ‘zero harm’ culture at BE Amman by adhering to H&S guidelines, always working safely. Understand when to raise a risk issue and how and seek guidance on best practice.
– Communication and engagement
- Working with the Logistical, Protocol, and Estates Officers ensure that tasks that affect colleagues are properly planned.
- Keeping customers up to date on progress of requests and dealing with any complaints or feedback.

- In order to deliver work to the highest standards, instil a culture of continuous improvement, customer service, and professionalism.

The jobholder may also take on other ad hoc tasks as required, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any other response to a crisis.

As such, a reasonable working level of communication skills in English (oral) is needed.

We are looking for a confident self-starter, someone who has the ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritise with limited supervision. The jobholder will need to be resourceful, resilient, and have a strong track record of working as part of a professional logistics team, ideally with experience in a similar logistical/ delivery customer-facing role, preferably for at least three (3) years.
The jobholder will also need to hold a clean and valid Jordanian driving license with no outstanding penalties or fines. A driving test will be conducted as part of the assessment/ interview for this role.
As with all CS jobs, no two days are the same. The Estate comprises an office building and a compound which includes leisure facilities (swimming pool, gym, tennis/ basketball court, football pitch, children’s play area). A major part of the estate are the leased properties for UK Based staff (around Amman) and a representational Residence for the Ambassador near 4th Circle. As such, the Embassy and associated compound are always busy. This brings with it regular and unusual challenges and frequent short-term requests that have to be prioritised alongside planned work. Being highly organised and able to deal with difficult situations, and being confident in understanding and meeting scheduled day-to-day tasks and ad-hoc or emergency requests are essential for this role. Having a calm approach and a sense of humour will also help!
This role also involves occasional heavy lifting so the jobholder must be physically able to lift items up to 30kg in weight. You will be subject to annual occupational health examinations to ensure you remain medically fit enough to perform the role. Reasonable adjustments will be considered to enable you to do your job and lifting equipment provided where it is safe and practical to do so to minimise potential harm. You must use any equipment provided correctly and safely and you will be trained to use it.

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable gross salary of JOD 796 per month based on 40 hours per week.
Salary will be paid in gross, and you are expected to comply with your tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the local authorities. If exceptionally you are not liable to pay Jordanian tax, you will receive a net salary, which is minus the deduction of an equivalent level of local tax. Further information on this will be provided at interview if necessary.
This role is for a full-time employment on a fixed term contract basis for two (2) years. The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-day probationary period (as appropriate). The appointment is subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances. The selected candidate must have a right to live and work in Jordan.
Normal working hours for this role are from 08:00-16:00 from Sundays to Thursdays, with half an hour for breaks. The jobholder should be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will also be dictated by operational needs and may involve working out of hours (evenings/ weekends).
