Main Purpose of Job:
The goal of the Science & Innovation team is to help the UK to become a Science & Tech Superpower by 2030. The purpose of this role is to support this goal by facilitating UK-Japan science, innovation and tech collaboration. The specific science or technology topics at any point will vary depending on UK Government priorities, and can cover the full spectrum of natural, life, medical, physical and social sciences, and their technology applications. You will promote collaboration by developing your knowledge of the UK, managing discrete projects, facilitating visits, providing research and contributing to briefing for UK Representatives and Ministers, leading meetings with external stakeholders, and collaborating with other teams to support the Japan Network’s objectives on science and technology.
What the Jobholder will be Expected to Achieve:
Increase UK-Japan scientific and innovation collaboration in priority scientific and technology fields by identifying opportunities, advising key UK stakeholders, developing plans and delivering projects, visits and events. This will include providing support for major Embassy events and senior UK visitors. You will identify and build relationships with contacts in Japanese ministries, funding agencies and the wider scientific community.
Support UK technology innovation and tech-based trade and investment by working with UK Government Departments to enable compatible approaches to tech and innovation policy, facilitate opportunities for UK technology-based exports to Japan and promote the UK as a highly innovative destination based on scientific excellence and technological expertise.
Report on Japan’s science, innovation and technology developments to the UK, and vice versa, analysing Japan’s policies and news to identify and highlight opportunities and lessons for the UK.
Contribute to the wider work of the Japan network, including taking an active role in the Crisis response plan and participating in crisis exercises. You will assume substantive corporate responsibility, supporting the wider Japan Network as needed, particularly during Network-wide events, and accompany major visits to the UK where appropriate.
Line manage at least one Science and Innovation Officer, ensuring they have the knowledge, skills, confidence and clarity of direction to manage key tasks for the team, including administrative tasks, project management, financial management, and wider priorities of the team and the UK Japan Network.
Resources Managed (staff and expenditure):
The role will line manage at least one other member of staff and have access to programme funding to support specific projects.

Normal working hours are 37.5 per week with daily core hours.
The Japan Network supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering. This particular role allows for flexibility in start and end times, working compressed hours, working remotely on one or a couple of days in a week, and the possibility of a job share arrangement, subject to agreement with management.
This position is advertised in Tokyo. The preference is for the jobholder to be based in Tokyo, but some remote working is also a possibility, depending on personal circumstances.
Learning and Development Opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):
The British Embassy Tokyo and the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) provides a range of training opportunities in core diplomatic and commercial skills, from networking and communication to project management. The British Embassy Tokyo works closely with missions across the Asia-Pacific region to share experience and learning. Working within the Science, Innovation and Digital Section presents an opportunity to learn about UK and Japanese science, innovation, and digital technologies and also be part of the global UK Science and Innovation Network.
Alongside a number of specific courses that must be completed upon arrival, the Embassy is supportive of learning and development. We offer five development days per year, and regular opportunities for learning and development delivered both within the mission and regionally in Asia. We also focus on using coaching and a buddying system to support new arrivals.
All staff are required to take a role in the embassy’s crisis preparation and response. Full training will be provided for this and regular opportunities will be available to test and develop your skills.
