The Department for Business & Trade (DBT) supports UK businesses to invest, grow and export. Asia Pacific (APAC) is the focal point for the UK’s trade ambitions, and Digital/Technology is a priority area where the UK has a competitive edge.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the DBT team at the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur and be part of our innovative campaign to develop more digital/technology partnerships for the UK in Malaysia, stimulating trade and investment flows between innovative British and Malaysian firms.

The Assistant Trade Manager (ATM) will provide support to the Senior Trade Manager for Digital/Technology, working collaboratively with teams across the British High Commission; across the APAC DBT network; and in the UK. 

We’re looking for a dynamic, creative, organised and enthusiastic team player who can develop effective relationships with colleagues, business and stakeholders.  Working as part of DBT’s Digital Trade Network (DTN), you will help deliver innovative plans and programmes to build digital/technology trade partnerships in Malaysia, increasing UK exports to Malaysia and the APAC region. 

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  1. Support UK Tech companies to win business in Malaysia through handling enquiries and providing market advice and support.
  2. Support marketing and promotional activities of technology/digital sector including organising trade events, webinars, visits/missions, workshops and other activities (in person or virtual) with responsibility for administrative/logistical elements.
  3. Identify and promote digital/tech export opportunities in Malaysia to UK companies.
  4. Help build business networks and relationships with Malaysia, APAC and UK stakeholders.
  5. Record client interactions onto a dedicated CRM system.
  6. Provide ad-hoc administrative support in the delivery of the digital/tech trade campaign
  7. Lead in knowledge management of Technology sector at DBT Malaysia including but not limited to:  maintaining and updating our business pipeline, contacts list and directory; collating research materials; preparing reports on meetings; managing budgets.

The role will involve working closely with partners in government and industry in Malaysia and the UK; with teams across the British High Commission; and DBT teams in APAC and the UK.  

The successful candidate will be joining a high profile and ambitious team and will be able to develop a wide range of project management and delivery skills while developing export opportunities for the UK.  If successful you will have the opportunity to get involved in a diverse range of DBT and corporate workstreams including planning and delivering high profile visits, organising L&D activities and engaging the business community. 

As DBT Malaysia team’s business priorities evolve, the successful candidate will potentially become involved in supporting other priority sectors/workstreams for DBT Malaysia, and a flexible approach is important.

Language requirements: 

Language: English and Bahasa Malaysia

Level of language required: Proficient in both written and spoken

  • Experience and/or qualifications in the digital/technology sector.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office is committed to developing its staff, working hard to provide a comprehensive learning and development offer. Staff have access to a wide variety of online resources through the Diplomatic Academy and Civil Service Learning. Staff are strongly encouraged to take advantage of all the available opportunities.

The job-holder will be required to take some specific training courses related to their role. All new staff undertake a workplace induction and there are a number of mandatory e-learning courses covering areas such as diversity, health and safety, and information management.

In addition to formal training, collaboration with a wide range of colleagues will deliver on-the-job learning experiences, including

  • Working in a diplomatic mission;
  • Understanding how UK international development assistance is managed / implemented;
  • Understanding effective programme management (including Monitoring, Reporting, Evaluation, and Learning).

Working patterns:

The standard working hours for the High Commission is 36.25 hours per week.
