Main purpose of job:

Home Office International Operations (HOIO) is part of the Home Office Intelligence network, our efforts focus on tackling those who wish to circumvent or evade the border security laws of the UK.

We are currently recruiting an officer to join our small team at the British High Commission in Malaysia responsible for Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Timor-Leste with a supporting role to HOIO teams in the wider Asia Pacific Region.

You will have responsibility for identifying, mitigating, and disrupting threats to the UK Border that cause harm to communities, businesses, public services, and the economy. These include (but are not limit to) illegal migration, human trafficking and modern slavery for sexual, labour, and criminal exploitation, organ harvesting and domestic servitude, Class A drug importation (including pre-cursor chemicals), CITES, Intellectual Property Rights offences and child sexual exploitation.

We achieve this through engagement, collaboration and building capacity with government and commercial partners to take preventative or law enforcement action against those who seek to exploit the vulnerable, facilitate illegal migration to the UK and engage in the importation of high harm commodities.Good decision making, the ability to work with minimal supervision and good networking and communication skills are essential, as is the willingness to travel as and when required. 

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Assess and develop adverse information received from a wide variety of sources.
  • Manage entry of data, intelligence & information and produce intelligence products & reports.
  • Utilise strong problem solving and analytical skills to develop intelligence and identifying patterns of organised crime.
  • Ensure all intelligence is handled in compliance with relevant legislation and policy and is accurate and fit for purpose.
  • Lead the identification and investigation of suspected organised crime and the preparation of investigation referrals to law enforcement partners.
  • Conduct training to host authority and commercial partners.
  • Act as a duty officer receiving and responding to queries from airlines giving advice regarding immigration rules.
  • Make a corporate contribution to the smooth running of the British High Commission, through a committee membership of other voluntary role.
  • Work as part of the British High Commission crisis response as and when required.
  • Be willing and able to travel regionally to deliver HOIO responsibilities and support other HOIO teams.

  • Experience of working in an operational environment –  Immigration /Customs/Police/Security
  • Strong organisational skills
  • An ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Presentation skills and experience
  • Excellent level of written and spoken English
  • Open to UK nationals only who have or are willing and able to obtain SC (Overseas) clearance

  • Working in a diplomatic mission;
  • Understanding how UK international development assistance is managed / implemented;
  • Understanding effective programme management (including Monitoring, Reporting, Evaluation, and Learning).

Working patterns:

The FCDO also operates an agile workforce. To facilitate this, you may be required to undertake other duties from time to time as we may reasonably require.
