The British Embassy in Beirut has a vacancy for an Information Technology Support Officer (ITSO), job grade Administrative Officer (AO) on a fixed term contract of one (1) year, with a possibility of renewal.
The jobholder will be responsible for administrative IT tasks across all teams in a fun, friendly Embassy. Working with the IT manager, the jobholder will keep the Embassy platform running efficiently. This is a vital role that helps everyone else to do their job effectively. The job holder will also be IT point of contact and will support regular visits by technical specialists. The job holder will help to ensure that staff maintain a good level of crisis preparedness, and in the event of a crisis they will serve as deputy IT crisis manager.
Roles and responsibilities:
1. Lead on a number of IT tasks for colleagues in the British Embassy Beirut and UK Office for Syria Office Beirut (40%). This includes:
- Administering account access and equipment processes for joiners and leavers;
- Managing distribution lists;
- Upkeep of IT inventories, recycling old hardware and ensuring sufficient new stocks;
- Maintaining Embassy IT systems/equipment with help of corporate services team;
- Provide IT support to official visitors;
- Liaise with London support services to escalate significant issues;
- Local point of contact for telephone support, liaising with service providers (landlines and mobiles) and satellite phone management;
- Receiving and dispatching the Visa bags.
- Ad hoc support for UK Office Syria colleagues based in Damascus
2. As IT point-of-contact (15%), support Regional Technical Support Staff (RTSS) before, during and post their regular visits. Between their visits, perform IT up-keep tasks, following (remote) instructions. Report back to the Deputy Head of Mission and/or Overseas Security Manager on a monthly basis, with whom you will collaborate on IT security.
3. Lead IT Operations During Emergencies (15%): Take charge of managing and securing all IT systems located within the Embassy’s secure zones in the event of an evacuation, ensuring continuity and protection of critical infrastructure.
4. Staff Induction & Crisis Preparedness (10%):
- Conduct regular induction sessions for new staff, clearly outlining IT evacuation protocols and procedures to ensure everyone is well-informed and prepared.
- Provide hands-on training to staff on the proper use and operation of crisis communication equipment, enabling effective response and coordination during emergency situations.
- Maintain sufficient IT resources and capabilities to ensure crisis preparedness and resilience across all communications and locations as required.
- You will help keep the larger IT crisis team crisis-fit, including through sharing knowledge and participation in crisis exercises.
5. Champion hardware and software improvements and empower staff to make the most of new technology (10%). This includes assisting the IT manager ensure regular, clear communications to staff, for example by highlighting (centrally-run) IT masterclasses.
6. Provide cover for IT Manager (10%) as required in times of leave etc. and support them deliver larger IT-related projects.

Eligibility:
If you are selected for this position, we will be able to employ you as long as you:
- Be able to obtain an appropriate level of UK Security Clearance; higher clearances can be granted only to certain nationalities. For this reason, candidates must be of one nationality only of British, American, Australian, Canadian or New Zealand in order to gain and maintain the level of clearance. If you already hold a higher level of clearance, please make this clear on your application.
- The British Embassy provides visa sponsorship. The British Embassy will be able to employ you on the condition that we are able to obtain the required residence and work permit in Lebanon. Candidate’s residence permit and work permit, and the expense to obtain them, will be their own responsibility.
Working hours and remuneration:
The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable salary of $2,645 per month. The salary will be paid gross, and you are expected to comply with your tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the local authorities. However, for third country nationals and UKB staff spouses/ partners employed by the Embassy, as you are not liable to pay Lebanese income tax, your salary will be abated by an amount equivalent to the Lebanese tax that would otherwise be payable (if appropriate).
There are no other allowances payable as part of this package. No accommodation and relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.
This position is for a full-time employment, on a fixed term contract of one (1) year, with a possibility of renewal. The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-day probationary period. The appointment is also subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances.
Conditioned working hours are 40 hours gross per week. Normal working hours are Monday to Thursday 08:00-16:00 and Friday 08:00-14:00. Flexibility on the part of the job holder may occasionally be required (e.g. out of hours work or in event of a crisis) and the Embassy will give flexibility in return. Process:
The recruitment process, including security clearance, is expected to take around two-three months. The security clearance process includes checks available in country and with UK, dependant on the security level required for the role and the candidates’ profile and UK footprint. You may experience some delay in the progress of this recruitment campaign, and we are working hard to minimise any disruption.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful at interview may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of six (6) months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
