The British Embassy in Serbia is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Maintenance Assistant to be responsible for daily maintenance of the estate – residential and non-residential properties i.e. various small repairs, plumbing, minor electrical carpentry/heating/cooling/ alarm checks and repairs. 

Roles and responsibilities  

Estate (60%)

  • Daily response to Work Requests and assistance with prioritisation, providing additional labour in consultation with line manager, dealing with emergency and other repairs (minor electrical, plumbing, heating, cooling, detection/alarms etc);
  • Carpentry (create/repair pieces of office and other furniture, miscellaneous brackets, etc);
  • Responsible for timely checks and setup of the properties (when acquiring and relinquishing), ensuring compliance with the FCDO standards; 
  • Responsible for regular checks, clearing and keeping the warehouse in good order;
  • Work requests administration including completion of documentation and sign-off;
  • Responsible for conducting health and safety checks in line with the UK Health and Safety Regulations in the owned/rented property (shared responsibility with CS Maintenance Assistant/ Electrical) in order to ensure safe and healthy environment of all properties 

Other (40%):

  • Communication with diplomatic staff with regards to final works scheduling;
  • Assisting local and UK contractors and supervising contractors;
  • Responsible use of official maintenance vehicle: record of driving log book/ evidence  of required maintenance;
  • Ad hoc procurement of the necessary tools/spare parts/materials/equipment;
  • Regular communication with the line manager for the necessary work (re-)scheduling and update;
  • Covering for CS Maintenance Assistant – Electrical;

  

  • Previous experience of estate and facilities management/property maintenance
  • Proven experience as handyman
  • Maintenance, plumbing and repair experience
  • Team working skills
  • English language skills (both oral and written, min. B1 level)
  • Confident user of MS Office Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Clean driving licence

  • Understanding of health and safety policies

This is for a full time employment of 39 hours gross per week on a fixed term basis for 8 possibly + 3 + 3 months (i.e. as long as paternity absence will last) as paternity leave cover.

Embassy core hours are from 08.00-16.30 Mon-Thu and 08.00-13.00 on Fridays. 

The Embassy supports the work-life balance of its employees, and is open to flexible working.

In addition to monthly salary, staff receives a meal allowance of €70 per month and transport allowance of  4,359 dinars per month (review each February) as per Terms & Conditions. 

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background and security clearance and must have pre-existing work authorization for Serbia in order to apply. 

The successful candidate will be hired as a member of staff under the terms and conditions which apply to all Country Based Staff (CBS)  in employment relationship; tax and social contributions will be paid accordingly. 

All contributions are deduct-able at the source. If for any reason the Employee is required to work for periods longer than the conditioned hours overtime may be paid. 

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Serbia are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Serbian employment law. 

No accommodation and relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

The successful candidate must have the right to live and work in Serbia.
