Who are we? 

The UK Mission to the European Union (UKMis) ensures the UK’s interests are promoted and explained to EU member states and the EU institutions. UKMis is part of a world-wide network of 270 Diplomatic Posts, representing British political economic and consular interests overseas, and is now looking for a Migration and Asylum Attaché.

Main purpose of job:

The holder of this position will play a key role in contributing to the UK’s migration objectives, with a key focus on developments in the area of illegal migration and asylum. The team covers a number of other high-priority areas, including borders, visas, and citizens’ rights.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • monitor and analyse developments in the EU space on migration policy.
  • producing briefing and advice and engage with both internal and external stakeholders, while remaining astute and spotting opportunities for working with EU and international partners.
  • build expertise and develop strong relationships with UK Government colleagues, as well as external partners. It is expected that the job holder will also lead for the team on upstream (external) migration objectives and on tackling modern slavery and trafficking in human beings.
  • lead on public diplomacy activities and projects.

This role will provide the opportunity to work on fast-moving and high-profile issues, with a great deal of political interest, and gain exposure to senior level UK Government colleagues at the UK Mission and in London.

The ideal candidate would be someone who is a good communicator, able to deliver at pace and is able to deliver effectively by prioritising workload and juggling competing demands during busy periods. They will need to be flexible about the exact nature of the work, and so will need to be able to adapt to changing priorities and developments.

Our Ideal Candidate shows: 

  • Full professional proficiency in English (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*);
  • Experience of working on migration and/or asylum policy;
  • Experience of working with international organisations/think tanks and/or non-government organisations;
  • Prior experience of reporting and/or analyse;
  • A self-starter, demonstrating a flexible, pro-active attitude;
  • A strong team player with good people skills; strong ability to network and interact;
  • Ability to prioritise, effectively manage and execute multiple and competing tasks within the agreed deadlines;
  • Full proficiency in MS Office applications.

Nice to have: 

  • Previous experience of working with UK Government departments;
  • French language skills.

This is a full-time contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week. This position will be filled on a “replacement contract” to cover a Maternity Leave. It is anticipated that the staff member will return at the beginning of January 2025. This is only a guide and any possible earlier return or extension to this date would be discussed with the successful candidate. The monthly gross salary for this position is € 6,795.71, HEO level.

In addition, we offer an extensive salary package, which includes a 13th month, luncheon vouchers, pension scheme, reimbursement of public transport and a lot more. We offer more days of annual leave than the Belgian requirements.

Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.

Staff recruited locally by the British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Belgian employment law.

The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.

Passport: officers are expected to be in possession of a passport due to the possibility that they may be asked to undertake business travel.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Belgium and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
