The British Consulate General in Jerusalem has a vacancy for a Digital Communications Officer, job grade Executive Officer (EO).

This is a key role in the British Consulate General in Jerusalem’s Communications Team. The jobholder will be responsible for implementing the Consulate’s digital communications with the aim to promote UK policies externally and inform internal audiences about the Consulate’s work, whilst supporting the objectives of both the Consulate as a whole and the individual sections.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • You will work as part of the Communications team to lead on delivering social media aspects of the Consulate’s communications strategy, managing the Consulate’s online presence: Twitter (X), Instagram, Facebook, website in addition to other platforms.
  • You will ensure professional, friendly and highly responsive platforms that maintain the highest standards of appearance, both in English and in Arabic.
  • You will help to generate compelling content for our internal and external media outlets, including planning, filming and editing videos, creating high quality infographics, editing photos, generating eye-catching graphic designs and writing informative texts. You will support our social media approach so that we remain cutting edge.
  • You will produce regular analytical reports on social media following and reach.
  • You will also monitor local social media scene on daily basis and produce reports on dominating political and cultural stories.
  • Develop and maintain networks with social media activists.
  • You will be an integral part in supporting the Consulate’s external events and ministerial visits, including branding, documentation, and thinking creatively of events themes.
  • Support the Communications Manager in producing certain traditional media products, including statements, press releases, speeches, translations (from English to Arabic and vice-versa) in addition to working closely to develop communication strategies, evaluation reports, communication plans and other related annual campaigns, including the UK scholarship programme “Chevening”.
  • Provide advice to Senior Management on how to respond to certain developments using social media techniques.
  • Work closely with the Consulate’s Development team in order to find creative ways to promote UK aid on social media, including the production of written and visual success stories in collaboration with the Consulate’s implementing partners.
  • Manage procurement and other processes as and when necessary, in favour of the communication team subject to budget approval and FCDO procurement policy.
  • The job will require the successful candidate to engage on a volunteer basis in Corporate Committees as required by FCDO as part of the employment package.
  • You will also going to oversee some financial engagement and manage some contracts, engage in purchasing as needed and possibly line manage contractors if required.

The above list is not exhaustive, and the jobholder will be required to be flexible and take on other ad hoc tasks as required, including participating in the Consulate’s emergency planning and any other response to a crisis affecting UK Citizens.

      • Excellent communication skills in English and Arabic, strong communicator (written and spoken) with an ability to influence at all levels. Able to express ideas and messages clearly and concisely and demonstrates courtesy and consideration in dealing with stakeholders across all levels.
      • University degree in relevant area, such as media, communications, journalism. Specialized certifications will be considered as an asset.
      • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in a similar role, preferably with INGOs and/or like-minded missions.
      • Proven strong knowledge of existing social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter (X) and Instagram), either from personal or professional use.
      • Proven history of graphic design, photography and video editing skills including using programmes such as Adobe Premier and in shot.
      • Deep understanding of the social media scenes in the OPTs at the national and local levels.
      • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
      • IT literacy in electronic media, Outlook and Word.
      • A willingness to work flexibly and as a team-player; ability to interact with people at all levels of seniority.

      • Excellent translation skills between English and Arabic.

      Eligibility:

      If you are selected for this position, the Consulate General will be able to employ you as long as you:

      • Receive the appropriate level of standard security clearance;
      • Currently hold a Jerusalem ID; or
      • Holds a valid local work permit or be able to secure one to work in Jerusalem.

      Working hours and remuneration:

      The Consulate General aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable salary of ILS 13,845 per month plus transport allowance of ILS 497 and social benefits. No accommodation nor relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

      This position is for a full-time employment, on a permanent contract basis subject to a 6-month probation period. Working hours are 38 hours per week. Normal working hours of the Consulate General is Monday – Thursday 0800 -1600 and Friday 0800 – 1400. The successful candidate should also be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will also be dictated by operational needs and may involve working out of hours (evening and weekend), particularly during events and visits or during times of crisis.

      Some remote/home working may be possible, in agreement with the line manager and in line with Corporate Services practice and subject to operational requirements following successful completion of the probation period.

      The Consulate General actively promotes learning and development including through a dedicated learning and development committee. All staff have the opportunity to develop their own personal development plan and receive feedback and support from their line manager. Staff have access to activities organised by the learning and development committee and to a range of online learning opportunities through the FCDO’s International Academy.

      Some mandatory and essential training are required at the start of the role (security, introduction to our IT systems etc). The Consulate General runs regular workshops and teach-ins from experts on different topics related to the OPTs, open to all staff.

      Some mandatory courses must be completed upon arrival at post, including on health and safety, data protection and bullying and harassment.

      Upon arrival at post, the jobholder and line manager will discuss a personal development plan. Opportunities for learning and development are diverse and plentiful and can include regional travel to shadow counterparts or trips to London for courses delivered by Civil Service Learning.

      Process:

      The recruitment process, including security clearance, is expected to take around two-three months. The security clearance process includes checks available in country and with UK, dependant on the security level required for the role and the candidates’ profile and UK footprint.       Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful at interview may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of six (6) months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
