Main purpose of job:
Responsible for driving improvements in our people management at British Embassy, Kathmandu (BEK), including but not restricted to performance management, well-being support, and learning development.
We reserve the right to review, revise or amend the roles and responsibilities from time to time reflecting the changing needs of business.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:
Human resource management (40%)
- Drive improvements to performance management, coordinating a well-run performance management process, which includes robust processes and support to line managers and staff.
- Manage HR cases and respond to HR related enquiries from staff, working closely with the hub, CSM and BEK leadership. Ensure up-to-date and confidential management of HR data.
- Play a key role in advancing staff survey outcomes by engaging with staff to promote positive change through the Ways of Working Committee as set out in the People Plan.
- Support new starters by preparing induction materials and meetings for new recruits. Assist Corporate Services to issue employment documents where required.
- Work with Fairness Champions and other groups to respond to staff grievances, including BHD. Lead changes to BEK’s approach to managing grievances at post.
Staff Wellbeing (45%)
- Champion staff wellbeing at post, working closely with the Ways of Working Committee, Staff Association, Fairness Champions and BEK leadership.
- Assist Corporate Services in organising annual vaccination programme for staff and dependants.
- As the main point of contact for new UKB staff and their families, provide community liaison support in the form of:
- advice about living in Kathmandu, organising familiarisation visits and moves to/from post;
- supporting efforts to hire staff and buy/sell vehicles;
- planning events for staff and their families; and
- updating the Post Report, Welcome Pack, and acting as the main counterpart for DSFA.
- Respond to requests for Employees Conditions and cost of living surveys
Learning and development (10%)
- Lead and develop the L&D strategy, and improving BEK’s approach to planning and executing L&D plans.
- Manage the annual L&D allocation process, running a transparent, fair and well communicated process for all staff.
- Evaluate Learning and Development activities for impact, while working closely with the International Academy (IA) Regional Team.
Other administrative support (5%)
- Provide support across corporate services and the operations team as required.
- Member of BEK crisis team
Resources managed (staff and expenditure):
Leads people management at post, working across the Embassy to deliver results.
Oversight of BEK Learning and Development Budget
Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):
Mandatory online learning with International Academy
Regional conferences as appropriate
Working patterns:
BEK offers some flexible working including working from home for up to 2 days a week where compatible with the role.

Some work outside office hours may be required, for example to assist arriving families, for which Time Off in Lieu will be granted at the discretion of the line manager

Essential on arrival:
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in Human resources,
- performance management or staff well-being role.
- Proven experience of managing a quality service;
- strong interpersonal and organisational skills
Language requirements:
- Language: English and Nepali
- Level of language required: Fluent

Basic Salary will be NPR 151,530 per month plus 10% provident fund Contribution.
