Main purpose of job:

The intern will provide support across different areas of the Embassy, including communications, political affairs, projects, environment, consular and corporate services. Through this opportunity, the Embassy will provide valuable work experience for an Ecuadorean university student. This role will be of particular benefit to those whose studies focus on fields relevant to the activities of the British Embassy Quito (BEQ). These could include but are not limited to communications, international relations, law, development studies, climate change, and economics.

Roles and responsibilities:

The intern will support the Political, Communications and Projects teams across a wide range of areas including research and briefings on key political, social and economic issues of interest to the UK, and will help with the Embassy’s communication efforts through social media channels, supporting the delivery of Embassy-funded projects and events. The intern will also provide support related to other-section events and visits, as well as other ad hoc tasks required to assist with the functioning of the Embassy.

In addition, all members of the BEQ staff play an important role in responding to crises, should they arise. The intern will receive crisis training to enable them to fulfil this part of the role.

  • You must be eligible under the relevant Ecuadorean legal requirements, namely that you must be currently enrolled in a Higher Education institution at an undergraduate level.
  • Interest in communication and political issues.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to respond flexibly to changing priorities.
  • Managing various pieces of work at the same time.
  • You must have the legal status to live and work in Ecuador.
  • Strong teamworking skills.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Spanish.
  • Legal status to live and work in Ecuador in your own right, from time of application.

  • Strong writing skills in English and Spanish.
  • Interest in new communication trends and social media.
  • Knowledge of the UK and its international priorities.

Must have the legal status to live and work in Ecuador.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.  

Working patterns: 

This internship is 30 hours per week. Flexible working hours within the Embassy’s opening hours can be agreed in advance with their Line Manager. Our hours are Monday – Thursday: 08.00 – 16.30, Friday: 08.00 – 13.00. The British Embassy in Quito operates on a hybrid model, allowing its staff to work from home up to two days a week.

Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate. 

The FCDO operates an agile workforce. To facilitate this, you may be required to undertake other duties from time to time as we may reasonably require. 

This is a 6-month Civil Contract (must be enrolled in an undergraduate programme at time of contract signing).

Monthly internship salary of US$460 + IESS contributions paid by Embassy in full.

Appointment will be subject to confirmation of a background and security clearance. The successful candidate will be required to provide timely documentation to support these processes.
